IRS refund error - contacting the IRS

I did my own taxes for '21 and filled online. I ended up getting a refund when I submitted and then a few weeks later the refund hit my bank....but it was for less than what I filled for. Soon after I got a letter from the IRS saying an error was found on my return and that the refund was for a lesser amount.

From the best I can tell it comes down to the 'Recovery Rebate Credit' and there being a discrepancy. The IRS letter gives a phone number to call and a deadline of July 8 to contact them to dispute/resolve the error.

I've called the IRS robo-tree number everyday for the past 2-3wks and each time the call automatically ends due to 'unusually high call volume' .....shocker right?? Has anyone had luck actually contacting the IRS about something like this or is there a different route I should be taking??

Haven't contacted them so this post wont help you but thought it was a good chance to tell my experience with the IRS.

For 2021 we owed a little over $700. Sent in the payment. Was withdrawn from our bank. About 2 months later we get a bill saying we owe an additional $700 some odd amount ($32 more than our original amount). I determined they never applied our original payment. So I sent a copy of our bank statement that showed they withdrew the payment. I added an additional check with the extra $32 they claimed we owed with a note explaining the check was to cover the difference in what we paid and what they say we owed. Today we got a refund check for $1.57. No faith in the IRS from us.
Get ready bal. You're gonna in for a problem.

The IRS/Taxpayer relationship is growing to be a complete disaster. Wait until all those Trump tax reductions are removed.

The RRC "error" is almost always that you claimed the RRC but had actually already gotten it.

Check your bank statements and see if you already got the amount they shorted your refund.

Second is to go to irs.gov and login by creating a new id.me login and view your account transactions. It will show the dates of any stimulus payments that are in question related to the RRC

Thanks for the reply. I did receive a partial amount of the 3rd Impact Payment, but not the full amount based upon everything I've read below. The difference in what I was supposed to receive and what I actually received is different than the amount shorted on the refund.

https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/2021-recovery-rebate-credit-topic-c-eligibility-for-claiming-a-recovery-rebate-credit-on-a-2021-tax-return
  • If you didn't qualify for third Economic Impact Payment or did not receive the full amount, may be eligible to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit based on your 2021 tax information. If you received the full amount for the third Economic Impact Payment, you won't need to include any information about it when you file your 2021 tax return.
You received the full amount of your third Economic Impact Payment if the total amount was:
    • $1,400 for an eligible individual who has a valid Social Security number (SSN) ($2,800 for married couples filing a joint return if both spouses have a valid SSN or if one spouse has a valid SSN and one spouse was an active member of the U.S. Armed Forces at any time during the taxable year) plus
    • $1,400 for each qualifying dependent who has a valid SSN or Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number (ATIN) issued by the IRS

Did you accurately enter the amount received in the tax software and does that match the amount the IRS says you received?

I've always been able to get through the call tree. Sometimes I've been on hold for an hour or more but never disconnected.

Rumor is the IRS has recently re-assigned half of their phone agents to help with the 30 million paper return backlog. This rumor came from CallEnQ.com which is a service used to shorten irs wait time for tax professionals.

You are lucky. Those of us who call often will often get disconnected - especially when they try to transfer you to someone else.

Hey wanderer, CPA here. The fastest way that you individually can figure this out is by creating an account online with the IRS and pulling your tax transcript. That'll should show what you originally input as well as what the IRS corrected it to be, according to their records.

You could also meet with a CPA and have them file Form 2848, Power of Attorney, and let them sit on the phone for a while and figure it out for you.

Currently, the last option would be to try and call. I would not do that because I've got better things to do in my off time. The reason we're getting long wait times isn't necessarily because of the IRS specifically. There are a few companies that realize that nobody wants to wait for an agent to assist you, so you pay them to sit on hold for you, then they call you when they get through and patch you in. They have thousands of phones that are doing this, which kills it for the average guy trying to get in touch with somebody.

If you're still interested in discussing this, I'm local (B/CS), but am happy to have a call if you aren't.

Thanks for the reply.

About 2wks ago I finally got ahold of them and actually got to talk to a helpful lady. The value that I used for my RRC was the value on the the IRS login site. Apparently that # was wrong compared to what I actually received. When I filed I used the RRC value from the site (as you're supposed to) instead of actual bank records. So it ended up being the fault of the IRS that caused the issue. The corrected return amount was disappointingly correct.
