A lot of upper middle class houses have added solar panels, as have many businesses, that had to have helped some yet this weather is so hot, and population Has grown so fast, new supply just hasn't kept up. It's kind of embarrassing since we are out on our own grid.

Also the crypto miners use a lot of electric.

Eh - disagree. We've seen balckouts all over the country the past few years. People just like to focus on texas since we have our own grid. Honestly, not sure why that matters.

I have no idea how they can confirm a possibility.

Yes it will be hot, and yes we will likely peak today but the grid producers and ERCOT themselves have measures in place to bring on additional generation and/or cut some large demand from certain commercial demand that it should be okay. There are levels the grid can take to meet the demand well over 80,000MW.

The 2-6pm timeframe should be a fun watch today.

Your link is a year old. Checking in from Oregon. 4th day of the year in the 90s. Back to the 70s by Thursday.

I don't miss Houston summers at all. We're a revolving door of fam/friends right now: just hosted friends from H-town for the week; had some two weeks ago from H-town for a few days; in-laws heading here from Wichita Falls for a week.

No, people focus on us because we are a red state and the O&G state. If/when we fail, the left uses it as justification for GND.

Never mind that a move towards GND in Texas is partially the reason we are not doing well and due to a previous ERCOT board that didn't even live here and did not practice any "fiduciary" duty to improve anything.

ERCOT does what the industry and the Texas Legislators tells them to do. They are puppets

Yah, I don't get why the State keeps pushing to bring in this stuff since ERCOT can't even keep homes heated and cooled.

The "cheap" rates that attract these guys are going to be gone soon the way things are going and we are going to be the ones holding the bag.

My understanding is that there are agreements/understanding that in times of scarcity, the crypto miners turn their operations off. The crypto miners actually help in a way.

That is correct. They will have agreements to be flexible and reduce their load or disconnect to keep the grid stable.

Some of them likely have agreements to cut operations. Some of those agreements may even include a payment to shut down. There are commercial agreements out there that encourage large demand users to curtail heavily during these peak times. that's usually what brings demand down from an earlier projection during the day.

Weather doesn't typically shift that much from the forecast to see a demand drop. For example, this morning the peak forecast was over 80MW. It's now below 80MW. Likely from ERCOT reaching out to those agreement holders to call in the curtail at certain times.

I also thought that at least some of them are purely operating off of flare off gas that would have been wasted anyways. Now it's not, and when the state needs the additional capacity, it switches back over to them.

Everybody keeps saying this but Ercot can't just willy nilly go change the market. Everything has to go through and be approved by the PUCT… who are effectively just puppets of the governor mansion.

The problems with the Texas power market are the results of bad policy set out by local government that really leaves little ones for reliability and appears hyper competitive on the surface… but is really a market that can be gamed as the power users expense quite easily.

It's summer. Granted, it's slightly hotter than "normal" but Texas is hot, it's expected. Are we going to say this about every week until October?

It looks like wind should be a bigger contributor this week than it was last week, and highs in some parts of the state won't be quite as high.

Nope, but the weather this week should be an item to watch. This is more about seeing what the grid is capable of this week. I am not hearing any generation outage so as long as things runs smooth this week, we could see some peaks.

Amazing how concerned these companies are when it costs them money to mitigate. Guess they are doing their part for the environment, just like hotels not washing towels/sheets unless you specifically request they do their job.
