No. I realize one man's junk is another man's treasure but this one seems especially pointless.

Why would I want to collect a game that will be almost unplayable considering the evolution of games. I got one of those Ataris that have all of the Atari games built into it a few Christmas's ago and then pretty promptly threw it in the trash.

The idea of playing those old games sounded awesome until you boot it up and realize how awful and boring those games were.

Anything that was widely popular to men in the 70's-90's that is no longer in production/print will likely hold value.

Older pinball and arcade cabinets in good condition often go for very high dollar.

Rewarding has many definitions.

Modulators Emulators ruined the potential for old video games. Other than nostalgia of owning the original console and games, if you want to play the games than a loaded up RaspberryPi can let you play all old console games.

The original consoles and cartridges are simply another comic book and baseball cards. Cool to look at and show friends, but otherwise useless. Perceived value that you MAY capture if there is a random run on these things like what happened with collectibles during COVID.

The Completely Unnecessary Podcast delves into game collecting quite frequently and touches on a lot of the market manipulation that occurs. Worth a listen for anyone that is interested in game collecting as a hobby and/or investment.

I think you mean emulators.

As with any collectable, it's all about demand and scarcity. Reprints don't kill that value of artwork, mp3's don't kill the value of rare vinyl, etc.

I promise that people buying unopened video cartridges for thousands of dollars aren't doing it to play the game.

Most collections aren't "useful".

An emulator doesn't remove the value of a rare video game any more than being able to view a replica of a piece of art removes the value of the original. The first issue of Playboy sold at auction for $3k even though I can see nudes on the internet for free.

The only real question is what kind of market there is for it.

Yep... I've got some silver/early bronze age comics that have shot up about 300% in a few years. At peak it was something like 500%.

Appreciate the correction on terminology, I knew it didn't sound right.

Reminds me of what I always say to the wife when she asks how much something is worth. My reply is always "what someone is willing to pay for it".

I've got one of those majora's mask limited edition unopened New 3DS XL handhelds back from 2015. Worth anywhere from $800-$1000+ now. Bought for probably $299 at the time. Maybe less.

A lot of the huge increases were perpetuated by 1-2 websites that are being investigated for fraud. Good video on the scam.
