Baffling.

I annual fund an ira with the 6K, then days later do the back door conversion. You only pay taxes if that 6K grew in the couple days prior to conversion.

False. You must consider if there are any other IRAs.

I have no idea what you mean. But you can say false all you want and it doesn't change the fact that I have been funding a traditional Ira and have back doored into Roth IRA for years now

Ok.

If you read through the thread, you can learn something it doesn't sound like you know about. No need to be combative. If you don't have any other IRAs, you're fine, but if you do, then you have a tax issue.

Just because you don't pay taxes doesn't mean you do t owe taxes.

Research the Roth IRA conversion pro-rata rule and then come on back.

If you don't qualify for the standard IRA tax deduction, do you just fund the IRA and immediately backdoor Roth it?

I read more. This issue doesn't apply to me.

There are 2 applicable income limits here. One is deductibility of traditional contributions. The other is direct Roth contributions. If over the Roth limit, that's where backdoor becomes a potential strategy. If under Roth, no reason to backdoor.

If you have ANY other (non Roth) IRA moneys pro rata becomes a concern. If you've rolled a 401k over to an IRA, own an IRA annuity, an IRA CD, SEP, SIMPLE, or so on. Many opportunities to get sideways of the law here.

As Squadron said, just because someone hasn't paid taxes on a transaction before doesn't mean they don't own them. A lot of people don't put this on their tax return because they don't know better. This is increasingly a focus for the IRS for audits. They have all of the information from brokers/banks to put this together, and it's a very easy query against 1040s of people who did conversions. Undoing an incorrect one isn't a fun project many years down the road.

I love threads like this. There are a lot of really smart people who have no idea what they're doing in this area, and can really benefit from good advice if only to make sure they stay out of trouble.

I have considered stop replying to threads about backdoor Roths because I really feel anyone in this income bracket would be wise to hire a CPA if for nothing else to simply have an hour or two conversation to make sure you are doing everything right... But I had to reply to this on because of the wrong information being given right off the top.

Probably not a bad idea given I'm a CPA and I'm still the one asking the question! Granted, I don't do anything professionally in this space and sometimes it's just easier to ask others.

I truly believe that somewhere there is a forum where you will not piss everyone off and find a home.

Might I suggest the East Texas board?

Hey now…we like our East Texas board just fine as it is. Don't send him over there to pee in the pool and ruin that too!
