…saying they didn't receive any quarterly tax payments?

We got a letter YESTERDAY saying we owe several thousand due in a few weeks with interest because they supposedly didn't get any of our quarterly payments. So now I'm off to the bank today to get check copies of what we sent to the irs because they did cash the dang things.

Just wondering if anyone else has had to deal with this.

Have you checked your account on the IRS website to see what is posted for the year?

And this is why I make my payments online, don't trust those idiots with any manual processing, especially since COVID.

Well this is probably going to be one of those lessons lived, lessons learned kinda deals. Wife has been sending in payments via check and I didn't think anything of it but will try and get her to do online in the future.

Our online account says we owe and I don't see a section for estimated quarterly payments received. Just what we paid via the return.

Check and make sure the payments weren't just applied to one spouse's SSN instead of linked to both taxpayers. I've had clients that have gotten a letter saying they owe money because the IRS only applied payments to one spouse even though they've been filing jointly for years. A phone call should be able to clear it up quickly if you can ever get anyone from the IRS on the phone.

Fun time to be a CPA dealing with the IRS every day.

As I was on the phone with the IRS rep and mentioned your post and that's exactly what happened. Thank you.

I 2nd this advice 1,000%. This has happened to me 3 straight years & for the last two years, I have just changed the Cover Letter date on the response letter & in a month it is cleared up. I don't waste time calling the IRS because no one ever answers (I get the "please call back later" auto-response each time I call).

Why would the IRS send you a notice about your estimated tax payments for 2022 when your return hasn't been filed yet nor is it due? Or is this a letter pertaining to your 2021 return you filed in the fall?

Was going to answer this.

Always file quarterlies on the SSN of the primary (top name) on the return!

Same thing happened to me even using EFTPS. The IRS is a national treasure.

Glad to see that was the case here. I had a client call me last year after getting a love letter from the IRS saying he owed them $300k after I told him to make an extension payment of that same amount through EFTPS. He accused me of sending him to a fake website and panicked saying that a Nigerian price now had his $300k. Luckily, it was the fact that they applied it to only one spouse and not that, though, lol.

We received a letter informing us that one of the members of our household did not have health insurance, which is false. I'll let my accountant handle it when we take our stuff for our taxes.

I'm floored, time and time again, when the IRS can't seem to connect a SSN on a payment with the return with that same SSN on it. If it were a W-2 or 1099 they would have no problem doing it. We had to deal with this several times recently... including with my own 2020 tax return.

Mine was dated November. However, they shorted me $15,000 on our payments. It turns out that they didn't apply my 2021 extension payment to my 2021 tax return. So my 2021 overpayment (which I applied to my 2022 estimated payments) was off by $15,000. I never got a notice on my 2021 tax return. But they showed less total paid on my 2022 tax return in the amount of $15,000.

Make sure that when you make any payments to the IRS that you use the TAXPAYER (the first person listed on the return) social security number and not the spouse. I am the spouse and I made the extension payment using my SSN.

With all of the automated systems and matching of SSNs, this really should not be an issue.

I had extended my 2020 returns for both of my S corporations (like I always do) then filed them 3 or 4 days prior to the deadline. I got a penalty notice for filing late on one of them, a few days later a penalty notice on the other one (post office took a while to deliver them). Tried calling and got through for the first one, but never could talk to anyone on the second return. Sent tracking information to show they were timely mailed. I kept getting penalty notices, kept responding. Got a letter on the first one that all was ok, penalty abated. Then got a letter saying they were researching it, a couple of letters over a couple of months, in fact. Finally got everything resolved but it took 10 or 11 months to do so. The IRS is a terrible agency for many reasons.

It shouldn't, but it is - its a common mistake we see and have to "fix".

I'm a CPA. I know better. But I logged in online and the system asked for MY information. If I made this mistake you have to wonder how many lay people make it.

I'm about to start paying my taxes quarterly and have never set up anything on the irs website. Any help on that front is appreciated. Hopefully it's as easy as sales tax with Texas.

You can make ES payments through the EFTPS system, www.EFTPS.gov, or directly on the IRS's website at www.irs.gov.

Making payments of sales tax to Texas is pretty easy. You can file your return and pay your tax online at https://comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/sales/.

We generally tell people to use the DirectPay option on the IRS website. EFTPS is difficult to set up and takes a week or two. Directpay can be done in 5 minutes. You just need some info to verify your identity and it walks you through the whole thing. You can set up 2 payments a day with that system.

Off the top of my head you will need:

PRIMARY (top line on return) taxpayer Name, SSN, and DOB
filing status of last years return (Married, single, etc)
Form number, year

Once the payment is set up you can have it email you a confirmation.

When you are verifying your identity be die to type in your address EXACTLY as it appears on the tax return you are using for verification purposes.

like for your business (941) or for you personally (1040 ES)?

The reason I ask is I have had a few clients come to us that THOUGHT they were paying quarterly 941s through Quickbooks, or thought that the 941 reports were filed electronically through Quickbooks. And they weren't. BIG MESS!

They pay interest the other direction as well. We amended a tax return and they sent us money plus interest.
