The kook factor is high with these roles. At least this kook decided to move on her own quickly

Sounds like she'll be fired many times in her life.

Perfect example of why personal recommendations are so very valuable when hiring.

It's fairly easy to figure out if someone can do a job. Figuring out if they are a flake is much much tougher.

Glad this one resolved itself so quickly.

Must be present to win. Cut your losses and move on. It won't get better.

I agree. I have managed lots of people. In my experience people that are either always sick or let some drama in their home life (usually a new drama after the old one wears off) have an effect on their work life, it never gets better and you usually have to move on.

That typically means: 1. They are a dramatic person and not someone you want to handle responsibility on your team, 2. They don't love their job so consciously or subconsciously they are looking for ways to not be there.

My experience with a coworker. She's been here 8 years, but 4-5 years ago, started getting sick often.
About 3 years ago, she informed us was diagnosed with MS.

Last 3 years, with covid, she was missing a lot of work. Maybe 1-2 days a month out sick, plus another 1 or 2 half days at doctor office.

I got back from vacation July 10, and she hasn't been in the office from then until now, she's out sick, including a hospital stay. I'd venture a guess to say this calendar year she'll miss 25-30 days of work.

I'd say your take on an often sick person is pretty harsh. You never know what they are going through.
We know our coworker has MS, because she told us, but she certainly didn't have to.

Imagine if she left here by choice and went to get another job.

I'd be willing to bet she doesn't leave, because she has 8 years here with 5 of those pre MS, so lots of sympathy and understanding from our owners.

Probably unlikely she'd tell you that you were rude and cold, if you weren't rude and cold.

No point being somewhere that makes you unhappy and she quiet quit for the win. Good for her!

I think I am the "sickly/drama" employee at my office this year. Burned through all my PTO with COVID then my wife caught it after me and I stayed home to take care of her. Then other random illnesses popped up with other family members I wanted to help out with and the final kicker was my best friend (class of 07 btw) came down with a very aggressive cancer and I took a lot of time off to hang out with him as he went through treatment and was at the hospital with him for the final week of his life.

I told my boss I wasn't going to sacrifice my vacation due to running out of PTO so I was going to take leave with out pay or I am resigning. The labor market is so tight right now any work they can get out of me helps and since I am not asking for any favors and willing to take leave without pay they told me take all the time I need. So far this year I have taken 5 weeks off without pay and I'll likely take another 2 weeks for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I'm willing to part ways with the company if I am too much trouble for them but they have assured me that leaving causing more problems than dealing with my schedule.

Rude and cold is how you handle an employee who is taking advantage of your business.

Edited my comment. No point in acknowledging this garbage.

To the OP, something to remember when you're bringing on new people:

Hire hard, manage easy, meaning, invest in the hiring process, check references, conduct more than one interview, etc. In other words, weed out the crap in your hiring PROCESS and you'll avoid crummy employees.

Your scenario reminds me why all new hires are probationary for the first 90 days.

People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

It's not really ever appropriate to act that way to an employee, as you don't really know anyone's situation. Plenty of examples in this thread.

In other words, it's not 1970 anymore grandpa.

I do manage a few people. No need to act rude, even if they're a bad employee.

Or maybe you're just a ***** and that's acceptable behavior where you work?

Hello, irony. Good job at not being a ***** at work. Must be hard to do since you seem like a *****

Give her some time. Finding a good assistant/office manager requires some patience. Anybody that's complaining about who you hired or how you hired them hasn't tried to find a good one lately. A good one is harder to find than technical staff, and they can be just as valuable if not more. I would give her 6 months.

I don't think she qualifies as "good". If anything, you usually get their "best" effort early on. This won't end well for employee
