How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm currently full time employed in the public sector, making good money. Over the last few years, I've been feeling like my strengths have not been put to good use. I have a passion for personal finance and helping others, especially first responders in this area. I'm wanting to explore part time opportunities in the finance world, specifically helping first responders set themselves up for success financially. I have a Bachelor's degree and have little motivation to seek another 4 year degree and believe the experience intensity of a CFP will be difficult with a full time job. I have found that an Accredited Financial Counselor may be a good fit. Can you please advise me on the possible job opportunities/needs for this type of work in the area? I would love to partner with an existing firm.

I've known hundreds of people that obtained the CFP and the vast majority of those did so while full-time employed. Further, of the 100 or so I knew best while they were preparing well over half had to meet the education requirement first, so had the CFP program to go through prior to prepping for the test, elongating the timeline. I've also been an instructor in the CFP program at SMU, which is full of full-time employed folks at night both in industry, those wanting to make a change, and people just interested for personal gain.

Not saying it isn't challenging, but if this is a passion/calling, this particular barrier to entry is met by many.

Really happy to hear you already know who you want to serve. That is a very positive leg up on most. Good luck!

Dr Harness is an incredible person. I'm a recent grad and took several classes from him and he will do anything to help set people up for success. Very passionate about what he does

Thanks for everyone's input. My main concern with the CFP is the 6000 hours of experience needed. This would be very challenging with a full time job and part-time job as I already work close to 4000 hours a year.
