Looking for recommendations for an elder attorney in Dallas/McKinny. My friend's mother passed and his father may need to go to an assisted living. They want to protect the assets they can and learn what they need to. Appreciate any recommendations!

Or just look for an estate attorney.

As a retired attorney, I don't believe that an estate attorney is necessarily the same as an elder law attorney. An estate attorney may or may not have the knowledge and experience to consult on all elder law issues. For example, an elder law attorney should have detailed knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid and how one might protect assets in the event of needing to claim Medicaid. It's my impression that most estate attorneys do not have that knowledge.

For the OP, unfortunately I do not have any recommendations or referrals.

Bumping this thread. It looks like we are going to need an elder law attorney for my mom, who is in a facility in Rockdale.

The short story- my sister is the main person that handles things as she lives 10 minutes away from where my mom is, so I'm not yet up to speed on all the issues or details. The nursing home is trying to recommend/push an attorney that works with them and other facilites, and they have quoted her a price. We're kind of leary about the situation (for example, is the attorney working for the patient or the nursing home) and the price quoted, so we'd like to find someone else.

If anyone here has gone through this, what did you have to pay to get this done?

WrightAbshire in Houston is quite good. We've used them for a special needs trust but they also specialize in elder law. Abshire is an Aggie.
