They don't want me to use my current position in my current office as a stepping stone to a different position within the company.
Sounds like the exact type of group with poor management that any smart person would do just that.

Just wear your ring and be proud to wear it. Other than that don't try to flex on people that you went to A&M. Nobody likes a person who flexes their alma mater.

With the school as big as it is now having a ring just means you're a part of the larger extended family. I've met lots of Ags and have found that the more traditional Ags (Student Bonfire/Bonfire/Corps/Old Ags) have been the most reliable. If they just went to school and football games, they don't have the gritty mentality that I can rely on. As others have said, the ring gets you in the door but you still have to prove yourself. If you were just a former student, it means you have to prove yourself more...to me at least.

Where did your boss graduate from?

My degree gave me an opportunity. It was up to me to work hard and be successful with that opportunity. I've worked with plenty of Ags who didn't have what it takes in a sales role and others from Tech, K State, etc who did. Not sure why you would bring up your degree in the manner you did.

I think what it comes down to is this: A&M, UT, MIT, Rice, Harvard, etc are hard to get in to, and graduate from. In order to do that, you have to bust your ass. Have that work ethic. Those are the traits needed to get into (and out of, don't get me started on top 10%) these school. It may say more about the individual's work ethic and grit than the school. The difference about a A&M is that we really teach and take pride in the other education. None of those other schools make that part of their culture. When a higher percentage of your graduates are wired and schooled like that, you tend to win more often than not.

Class of '23 here. Graduated in December of '22. My boss just told me that having Texas A&M on my degree doesn't mean anything compared to having a degree from anywhere else. I work in sales. Thoughts?

Yes, your A&M degree means "nothing" compared to Harvard or Stanford or MIT, depending on the area of study.

PS: I have an A&M engg degree and no degree from the other schools.

That's at least an insecure boss and possibly crap company culture.

However, don't flex your degree. No one cares once you are in the real world other than **** talking sports.

Most of the people that worked from me were from all over the country. Ive only had one Aggie and one Longhorn over the course of my leadership career.

To add some context, the discussion was about my commitment to a future with the company. I conveyed that I have a degree from Harvard and I hope to be successful, so I was looking for assurance that as my performance and experience grow so will my compensation.

I changed one word in your post. Pretend this is real life now and tell me how arrogant you think this comes off.

He's right, you don't need a good degree to be able to sell effectively.

The best thing my degree has done is get me in the door. After that it's all up to you. No one walks around with a billboard above their head that says which school they went to, but it is nice to see the Aggie ring.
