MSTR probably should be excluded…

So, you tripled to NASDAQ, quadrupled the S&P and 10x the Dow. Nobody ever does less than doubling the market on Texags. Berkshire would do well to read Texags more often.

I was only up 11.8% this year but when your net worth is $34.7M that is still a tidy sum.

Best performer: your mom.

That is a good question and made me wonder how I faired.

The stocks I manage myself with Fidelity are up 54.5%. My big winner is Microsoft.

Our regular accounts we have with Raymond James and those are up 14.16%.

Our IRA/SEP retirement accounts are, for the time being, with a regional brokerage. I am too lazy to look right now but will tomorrow.

Edit: Our SEP/IRA with a regional broker are up about 11% from the end of 2021, which obviously takes in the bad year of 2022.
Our regular accounts with Raymond James are back to where they were when we moved our money there in late 2021.

1/3 of bag in MSTR. I am a big fan of Bitcoin and went irresponsibly big on MSTR.

The S&P 500 is up 28% this year. Keep that in mind before deciding that your 30%+ return means you'll soon be capable of joining the ranks of the Tiger Cubs.

I haven't looked across everything but eyeballing stuff I came in around the S&P number or slightly below it, overall. I'm also mostly a buy and hold index person with more exposure to conservative bets than most of you (I assume) so that makes sense.

Almost 40% across iras and roth iras of both wife and my accounts in fidelity.

Not one change was made in 2023. No buying, no selling, nothing. Just all hold overs from last year.

Wife has nflx, aapl, cost and a few mutual funds. I have about 20 individual stocks.. meta, tsla, aapl, stld, nue, msft, googl, amzn, etc. plus a few mutual funds.

Gains are well into 6 figures for reference.

best performer probably meta, up 183%.
Tsla also up over 100%

Up about $800k this year but that's barely over a 21% return from where it started. Wish I could pick them like OP.

To be fair my MSTR holding was down like 70% in 2022 and I think overall I was down like -40%. But I held my confidence in Bitcoin and doubled down and it paid off in 2023.

Congratulations well done.

My sarcasm initially was how these threads are always the winners and never the losers. Like it would've been cool for you to say in '22 my MSTR is down 70% and overall I'm down 40% but I'm going to double down and see how '23 goes.

Good luck in '24!

why do you think it's amazing that a handful of college educated people, any middle aged or older and posting on a finance thread, would be 'rich'?

I'm mid 40s, and have never maxed out an Ira or 401k.. usually just company match, or less, and was super conservative in my 20s, but last 6-7 years a bit more aggressive.

Not hard to imagine that kind of investing can amount to $500k-$1m+over 20 years. Much more if you were maxing out all those years, and much more if you're mid 50s so 30 years of growth.
Then consider the nearly 15 year bull run we've had.

For the younger crowd out there; The best time to start investing was yesterday. The second best time is now.

2023 S&P 500 was up 26.29%. We're up 29.23%
2022 S&P 500 was down 18.28%. We were down 5.85%
Over the past 7 years our best year, ironically, was 2020 (Covid). We were up 65.24% compared to an 18.70% gain for the S&P 500.

Up about 63%. Biggest winners AAPL and NVDA. A dog in FIGS. Also have mutuals in the S&P and techs plus BRK-B. Started to build a position in OXY. Really tough year in 2022. We are due a correction. Tom Lee mentioned late last week that he expects a leg up in January and then a pullback to the 4400 range to be followed by an EOY of 5200. Im considering a sale of some AAPL. I've never sold a share of AAPL but it dwarfs my other position. I need to rebalance at some point. Good investing to everyone!

I can see Tom being correct. Fed will not cut rates if the market is red hot.

That would be quite the reversal from the 4-6 cuts they've already telegraphed. Who the hell knows though. They have very little control over any of this at this point, in reality, so I take what they say with a grain of salt.

Now do 2022.

Nobody ever comes back from Vegas raving about how they lost their ass, but they sure do come back talking about the heater they were on at the craps table.

I find similar behavior when it comes to market performance.
