As the title says I'm looking for someone to talk to and build up a bit of a plan that I can execute on. My background is Finance so I've always been comfortable managing my own funds and I still am so I'm not looking for someone to manage the money itself just yet, but I'd like to start getting a bit more strategic about it and looking for the more forward planning side of it (even still being ~20 years away from retirement).

I mentioned in the millionaires thread that my goal had always been to hit $1million in assets (401k/HSA/IRAs/Pension but excluding house) by 35. It was one of those things that I set out to do but was never really sure if I'd achieve it or not. Well sure enough, we're on track to hit it, probably closer to $1.1m. However, my strategy up to that point has basically been as simple as max HSA, and max my Roth 401k with company contributions going Traditional for tax diversification.

Now that the first goal is likely to be met (barring a market crash in the next two years), I'd like to start thinking about my next two goals (early retirement between 50-55) and buying land.

I'd like to understand what steps I should be taking now to help facilitate an early retirement and what the risks I'll likely encounter are and then also understand my capacity for possibly taking some of the wealth we have accumulated and buy some acreage (nothing huge, probably less than $500k) and what impacts that might have on future retirement.

Good Aggie friend of mine was VP for a large regional stock brokerage/financial service company then was President of a nationwide clearing house for stock brokers. When he retired a couple of years ago he move his investments from the regional firm he had been a part of and went with Fisher Investments.

When I retired 3 years ago I asked his advise. He went with a national firm (Fisher) because it had the resources to research and provide data to its clients. His old regional firm just did not have the same resources. I talked to Fisher but did not like their sale tactics and, more importantly, the closest adviser I could talk with face to face was in Plano. This face to face relationship is important to me. We live in San Antonio and also have a house in College Station.

We ended up going with Raymond James for two reasons:
1. Large national firm with lots of resources.
2. A local wealth advisor, who is an Aggie, who we like and trust.

I still handle some of my own investment through a Fidelity account because I enjoy the challenge. But I own fewer and fewer stocks through that account.

So, from my experiences, find an advisor you like who is with a national firm that has policies you are comfortable with. Some of the suggestions above fit what I was looking for.

Good advice but I would like to say you should focus on finding an independent advisor who has a custodial relationship with a large firm (Schwab, Fidelity, Pershing, Raymond James). The important thing is they need to work for you not the brokerage firm. They should give you options for where your funds can be custodied.
