How long do you want to ignore this user?
This is more of a rambling post but I know there are multiple financial advisors on this board. I current largely self manage our accounts with a handful of our funds at Vanguard PAS. However, that service is good to a certain level but is not covering our current issue.

My wife and I are at a level of disagreement on spending vs. saving and I'm looking for someone to help build a more comprehensive financial plan based on our current assets. My wife has a few potential liquidity events which she accounts in our net worth which I do not. I think the simple answer is we need a referee in building the financial plan as we could use an independent person to help build out the plan.

I'm not overly interested at this point in time for an investment manager (I prefer to keep my accounts and not move them to RIA to manage) but open to starting a relationship with a RIA. However, given our asset base and age, the fees are concerning, so looking at an alternative fee structure in the interim. I'm not asking someone to work for free, I'm happy to pay well for a good service, but looking at a conversation.

I would also look for this person to step in and manage the assets if something unfortunately happened to me.

I'm open to any guidance or feedback from advisors on here.

Just curious about what you think is a reasonable fee to pay someone to do this? Hourly rate? Annual flat dollar fee?

I operate a fee only RIA but we primarily use a AUM fee as you are aware that's pretty standard. I've seen some firms moving to a flat rate per year of say 10k and no asset management.

I'm open to a conversation but I just think it's a challenging thing to figure out!

Does she work too? Or is she a SAHM?

If she's used to spending all that you make, you need to get her mind right. I was there too. She needs a budget plus a little wiggle room for her pedi's…

The last flat fee plan I looked over was $2500 for a poorly done eMoney report.

Same question as OP.

In the Amarillo area.
Not an Internet millionaire, but in really good shape.
Wife and I on same page.
House and small farm paid for
No debts
Good 401K, pension, and Roths

We don't need someone to sell us their company's stuff, we want advice on how to maintain principal and avoid taxes. Recent windfall made the taxes part important.

I have the names of a few "Dave Ramsey" approved, and Google reviews of some more locals, just unsure how to cut through the fog and pick a good one.

If I made a list for Mrs. to hire someone after I was gone and if none of my partners were still in the business...CFP and/or CPWA designation, clean broker check, not a frog (stays with a firm for more than 5-7 years at a time), open architecture institutional style portfolio management approach, team (not sole practitioner) with an average age younger 50, ability to help with cash management + investments + insurance are a starting place. Amarillo has some good guys that check that list, but with WebEx location isn't as important anymore.

Can't believe this didn't get more responses / recommendations. I'm looking for an advisor/planner in The Woodlands area. Couple of years from retirement.

Does anyone have recommendations for a financial advisor/planner in North DFW?

I want to meet with as many as I can in a month or so.

Why not open up your search to outside the area to see if there are folks who you connect with more and that might be a better fit?

About 75% of my meetings these days are calls/Teams meetings and that's at the client's request.

The challenge is that financial planning alone compared to asset management does not pay very well. So the good asset managers become financial planners in order to offer that service as a value add. Strip away the asset management fee and it's not really worthwhile.

There are around 104,000 CFPs, 4,000 CPWAs, and 9,000 CIMAs. Those are the big three professional credentials in wealth management. I have all three and 30 years of experience in The Woodlands, so I'm probably desirable to some on paper at least. However, I take on new clients only through careful vetting and referrals. Consider also that many good revenue prospects simply bring no joy to work with, so there is the challenge of "fit." In my practice it makes no sense to procure new relationships under 10,000 in recurring revenue, and with few exceptions my clients exceed a multiple of that figure. I think most people face similar hurdles in hiring a financial professional (credentials/fit/scale). So the best advice I can give is to talk to family, friends, colleagues and try to work in by referral. Or if you're younger, find a younger advisor who offers planning and investment management and grow together. Their skills will grow with experience, as will your portfolio and ability to pay.

It's not unlike many professions where there are only so many hours in a day/week/month/year and to meet a business goal one simply cannot take anyone or everyone.

I would agree. My FA is in Pittsburgh. Practically across the country from us. He makes an annual house call though to come and see us on top of scheduled calls and then when I just ad hoc call him for whatever.
