We've been with Wells Fargo for everyday checking and savings since I was in college. We've got our savings in Barclays.

They closed down the Wells Fargo location near our house and my job will be moving locations to an area without any real convenient WF locations or ATM's.

Never been a fan of WF but stuck with them out of laziness and convenience of their locations. Now they're not convenient and we're thinking about changing banks.

Any suggestions? We're in the Houston area. My wife has had some dealings with Stellar Bank and seems to like them.

TLDR: want a new bank, where should we look?

In Houston I'd recommend Amegy Bank. Big enough to handle anything you need but not so big you're just a number.

What kind of relationship are you looking for? If it's really just for handling deposits and paying bills, I would just use a national chain like Chase. If you're biggest grudge with WF is a closing of locations, I'm not sure why you'd want to go to a bank like Stellar that's even less convenient as far as locations go.

I use Chase due to them having locations/ATMs all over the country. My interaction with them is rather limited, I don't need a personal relationship with a banker. It's honestly just a place for money to flow through and pay bills. My main CCs are also Chase, so there's convenience of one-stop online bill pay. I don't keep any more in there than I'm going to need for the month. Everything else is auto transferred to brokerage and online HYSA bank.

Have been happy with Prosperity bank for years.
The now Stellar bank in our area has changed names a dozen times it seems like over the years, including recently. A relative banks there and mentioned it's annoying to change constantly.

Find a local credit union. Depending on the CU, there should be very few fees, decent options for savings, and competitive rates on loans.

If your banking & something else (brokerage, mortgage) exceeds $250K you're considered Preferred at Bk of America. My outside ATM fees are reversed and their tech is pretty advanced. Lots of people dislike BoA but I've never had a problem that wasn't solved online and I can't think of a single reason to go inside a branch unless I need something. Which is good BC they keep closing branches. Their fraud department is extremely good.

Allegiance Bank of Texas merged w Community Bank of Texas creating Stellar Bank. Allegiance Bank was never known as anything else, nor was Community Bank of Texas. Dozens of name changes doesn't pass the snuff test for either of them… I'm Guessing you're probs by Woodway in Houston? I think that was an ICON bank before ABTX bought it. I can't remember but I know that Woodway was one of the few locations that was previously branded. Katy was too. Kirby and 59 was the other IIRC.

Steve Retzloff and George Martnez (Sterling Bank) are the bankers that got ABTX off the ground. Then they brought in some other lenders from Cadence w Paul Murphy and then circled the wagons w Vidal Rameriz in Katy to start.

My dad was one of the founders of ABTX/STEL and was on the board until the day he passed away.

Just do your due diligence if you choose a national bank - don't assume they have local branches.

I switched our business checking from BoA over to Capital One because they offered a high-yield business savings rate. Everything was fine until I had a foreign check I needed to deposit and found their closest branch to Fort Worth (the 12th largest city in the nation) was 45 minutes away in Irving.

The national banks are trash for customer service and it's nice to be treated like a human instead of a number. When I walk in any of those three banks I'm greeted by name and the next words out of their mouths are usually "how are the kids?". And if I need something I text or email my banker and it's handled. Happy to introduce you to someone at each of those three banks if you'd like.
