My grandmother in law is working with an estate attorney to properly set things up for her 3 kids. It's not overly complex but involves some out of state ranch land and some rental properties. One thing that has surfaced is a very large coin collection…too big to transport all at 1 time feasibly. The family is debating having this valued and sold to split among the kids soon, but not in a fire sale by any means. Does anyone know of any legitimate avenue to have this sort of appraisal done or ways to go about starting this research? I suppose could take a "sample size" to someone once we inventory better. DFW area would be closest metro. TIA

Wow, impressive! Not sure I've ever seen one that was too big to transport all at one time.

Well we're not talking "Italian job" type weight, just cumbersome heft/volume

If it is that big of a collection I would reach out to Stacks Bowers. You can send them photos and catalogs if you have them and they can assist and handle the entire auction, I think they take 19-20% of the final auction total.

The big question is if it is a collection or just a horde of coins. Collections would be more the coins graded, uncirculated coins, in rolls of uncirculated that are stored properly. Or is it just a horde of mostly loose coins in boxes, jars, etc.?

Either way there can be a lot of value based on dates and condition, but most auction houses arent typically going to take the time to sort through a horde of coins unless there is some potentially large value coins in there and then either you will have to do some research or hire an appraiser to.

Man, I would hold on to good silver. Some thoughts think silver may go to $150-200 per oz.

I thought the same thing about silver 20 years ago. Turns out I was wrong.

I've been a coin collector for over 30 years (mostly Morgan Silver Dollars). Since you are in the DFW area, I would HIGHLY recommend you contact Hertiage Coin in Dallas. They are one of the largest coin auction houses (I've purchased over 75% of my coins from them). I believe they will appraise your collection for free if you choose to sell through them. If you don't or can't bring the collection to them, you could go to their website and lookup the coins yourself to get an idea of current value. Feel free DM me if you'd like to discuss offline.

Congratulations!

Just my opinion, but Morgan Silver Dollars are absolutely the finest U.S. coin ever.

I can remember when Morgans were still in circulation. Not used a whole lot but not uncommon either.

I will always keep all of my silver. It will always be worth something. Other coins however may end up being worth nothing one day. Who knows

20 years ago, silver was approx $5 per oz and today it's $36. Demand for silver has increased with solar and high end computing ramping up.

I'm planning to give it to my kids. I hope it blows up. Just didn't work out for me.
