I don't post frequently to this board, but have a specific question and thought this might be the place for the most informed answers.

I'm planning a major career shift next year. Without belaboring the details, the shift will take me out of the corporate world, where we have enjoyed premium benefits including great health insurance, to self-employed status.

I know virtually nothing about standalone health insurance policies…best way to shop for them, what to expect to pay, things to look out for, etc. I assume some here probably have some knowledge on this, so whatever advice or wisdom you can share is great. Thanks in advance!

If your MAGI is relatively low, you can get some really nice subsidies. At least for now.

careful with those, if you make more than what you list they will penalize you big on your taxes

In the past I found it exceedingly difficult to get health insurance policies I was interested in as self employed. Some of the heathcare sharing ministries might be a good option, if you swing that way. You might consider taking on an employee so you can pool healthcare.

Post your new onlyfans account here. F16 loves the feet!

Not sure if this has changed, but our BCBS PPO policy was only possible when we used our LLC as our " group". .
Wife and I are the two members, with no employees of the LLC. It is expensive, but was the only PPO option we had when it was set up.

Let us know if you figure it out. I retired pretty young (48) but insurance for my family of four is the one aspect I grossly miscalculated. I have explored various options from here to Sunday and all options are terrible. It is absolutely brutal!!!

Mas89, if you don't mind sharing, approx how much is the BCBS PPO?

Don't know if it's the same, but we just received pricing for BCBS PPO. It's COBRA (so 100% of the cost) because my wife just stopped teaching:

-Employee $627
-Employee + spouse $1,694
-Employee + children $1,066
-Family $2,132

3,000 per month for a 58, 54, and a 20 year old. It goes up a little every year and has gotten ridiculous. But not willing to go without a quality PPO policy.

Been doing some research past couple of days. ACA is going to be a little cheaper than Cobra at least for this year because there are credits in place right now based on your income. However, those credits go away in 2026.

Difference is that ACA won't have the same provider network or coverage, so that's the trade off. Will likely just roll with Cobra for 18 months and then flip over to ACA.

Also, there are no catastrophic plans with ACA unless you are <30 or poor so that's not an option. It's hard to tell the difference between the various metal plans that ACA offers even though they tell you what those differences are which is essentially you pay more of the bill with Bronze and your share decreases as you work your way up to Platinum. I don't really see that in the numbers I'm looking at across the plans, but I haven't loaded stuff into a spreadsheet yet to do a direct comparison.

I think if they're in your tax return they aren't eligible.
