Notes from Talkin' Hoops with Gary Blair

* Headed to Austin to watch Aggie signee Peyton Little out of Abilene Wylie play in the state tournament. She’ll be playing in the semifinals this afternoon.

* Everything at the induction ceremony to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco was first class. He’s not sure there is any better hall of fame around besides Cooperstown or the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The volunteers were tremendous and he was very thankful of all the people that helped him to get where he is today. The best thing about being on stage and looking across the Ferrell Center was not seeing Brittney Griner anywhere around. Shawn Andaya-Pulliam spoke first and he spoke second because the speeches went in alphabetical order. Texas high school football’s all-time winningest head coach, G.A. Moore, stole the show and Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith gave a very good speech as well.

* He and Mack Brown stood up together and each did their respective hand-sign to one another and Mack turned to him and told him that was for the other folks and that the two of them were still friends. He might go see him at lunch today while he is in Austin and he is still a class-act. He knows that Aggies aren’t supposed to like Longhorns, but he likes Mack Brown.

* Hasn’t been able to watch the tape of the Baylor game yet because he’s been going 100 miles an hour the past few days with the Hall of Fame stuff going on. He probably won’t watch it until he gets back to College Station late tonight, but he knows what the team did wrong besides missing free throws which anyone can figure out. There were some execution problems in the screens by the post players and those screens were needed because Baylor plays outstanding perimeter defense. The team got called for a couple of moving screen fouls because the post players weren’t there in time. The play along the sideline where the ball bounced off the referee’s head and led to a Baylor lay-up really hurt. It was a one point ball game at the time and they were able to turn it into a four point lead after that play. The team ran the play not quite perfect and Baylor was able to deflect the ball away. The referee was inbounds and the Baylor player was out of bounds, but came back in and established herself and was able to continue playing. It was just bad luck that the referee was in the way, but it was also a bad play on the Aggies part.

* When asked about whether he has seen a better post-guard combination than Odessey Sims and Brittney Griner, he responded that Maya Moore and Tina Charles were a pretty good combination. He hates to give a little bit of credit, but Kim Mulkey and Janice Lawrence were pretty good while he was at Louisiana Tech.  He also thinks that Sydney Colson and Danielle Adams last year were a pretty solid combination as well. There doesn’t have to be one definitive best of the best because there are lots of good players from different eras. The prevailing theme of the speeches last night at the Hall of Fame induction was giving credit to those who have helped you along the way instead of putting yourself first like too many people tend to do.

* In order to close the gap between A&M and Baylor, the team needs to find a way to rebound with them. They shot better than any other team against the Lady Bears all year and there were a lot of things the team did well. They attacked the basket as opposed to settling for jump shots against Griner and were able to get her into a little bit of foul trouble which helped the team tremendously. Hopefully they are closing the gap between themselves and Baylor, but at the same time, they haven’t been able to widen the gap between themselves and the rest of the league. Oklahoma who beat Texas Tech the other night is right with A&M, and Texas is still fighting for their tournament life. Texas has to beat A&M on Sunday to get into the tournament so they will be bringing their best game. If the team ends up losing to Texas, they will play them in the first round of the Big 12 tournament and they don’t want to play Texas twice in a row. If they win, it looks like they will play Oklahoma State in their first game of the Big 12 tournament. The team needs all the momentum possible going into the tournament season and needs to keep it going. The Texas game will be televised at 12:00 on Sunday.

I would love to know what he really thinks of monkey face mulky. She does her best to disrespect A&M every chance she gets.
