Bucky destroying the fading image of Taylor. How can Bucky create something exciting within months while Taylor can't do it in 4 years….. even her best year 19-11 and NCAA first round was filled with glaring issues
Great coaches turn average players into good players. I think a lot of it is the style he brings to the table. Helter skelter; constant pressure, turnovers. He focused on shooters and his shooters are ballers. His team has a lot of issues, though, and he has to balance it out quite a bit (turnovers, not blocking out, etc). We will lose to teams that have great guards that aren't affected by the press, but that's ok. I'm so impressed with what he's done so far with this team.
At the end of the day, it's all about energy. The energy you bring to the table is rewarded. We SEE the energy he brings. Visually, Joni and her staff do not bring that energy. Very low energy staff and it translates to the girls. That's my opinion. I'm sure others disagree, but from the outside looking in that's what it seems like.
I'm going to say something controversial, but this is my opinion and I know there will be those that say I have nothing to back up my claims. My opinion is that Joni does not want to be here (and neither does her staff). This is not a cultural fit for her or her staff and she's just going through the motions. She has been a great statesman and is professional on and off the court, and she speaks well and represents the university with class and dignity. But with the resources she has both financially and in her bag of connections, and to only be able to win 11 conference games in 4 years is unbelievable for a driven elite coach.
I'm going to add an edit; I do believe she wanted to be here and thought she would be successful. You can see the frustration and mental fatigue on her face now. To me it seems like she's given up. After her players bailed on her I think she's in a mental state of not knowing what to do. It's not easy to be the face of a program that is basically failing at what you were hired to do and build. I feel sorry for her honestly. We all wanted it to work out.
