Thats a given once they're in the house. What I need is something to wake me when they break in.

A dog. A small one usually barks at anything because, well, it's smaller than everything it meets.

I was going to say this but figured I had already been enough of a smart ass.

We have Vivint due to their unmatched cameras, and we love the system. It is on the higher priced side, but you get what you pay for.

This plus the state of the art Labrador Camera system make for a decent home protection system.

We have plenty of guns, but that isn't going to protect your house when you aren't home.

I have a cigar chair in my garage. When the block walking sales guy comes up to pitch his deal after his first sentence my two dogs let loose inside the house. I just say to home hear those dogs? He says yes. Then I pull my 9mm Shield tucked in the chair and say…I'm good.

Based on my past experience no home security system is going to "protect" your home while you're away. It'll just alert the police to come write up a report…

Simply safe for just a simple door alarm.

Eufy for cameras and doorbell. I really like how they are fully wireless, battery powered and only need to be charged about every 6-8 months. Easier than running Ethernet cable to those nooks and crannies.

Doorbell camera is great.

I've had some good experience with axis products. Mostly in commercial application, but they make a quality product.

ETA: with regards to video surveillance, try and find something that mounts flush to the soffets around the side of the home. Makes the cameras less visible, so the home doesn't look like a prison.
