How long do you deal with previous owner packages after buying a home?

Probably not directly a real estate question but I thought I'd ask here.

We moved to Dallas last year (bought our home here almost a year ago now). The woman of the couple we bought from ran her business out of the home. She's a decorator or designer of some kind. She apparently still has vendors catching up to the fact that she moved and as recently as yesterday we are still getting packages for her.

Up to this point I've gone through our realtor to get in touch with them through their realtor and one of them comes by and picks it up off the porch.

I am a bit tired of dealing with it, even though it's a few text messages and doesn't seem like that big of a deal. I also don't want to be responsible for her business items. Stuff that's in envelopes I have been writing return to sender and putting back in the mailbox. But I honestly haven't figured out what to do with packages at this point except try to get them picked up by previous owner.

What says the real estate board?

It's probably unsolicited samples... if I'm ordering something to be shipped to my home business and I have recently moved, I am verifying that I have the correct address.

I certainly wonder about this option.

Straight to the garbage can without hesitation or regret. It's been a year. I wouldn't have bothered after a month.

We've been in our house for 12 years and we still get mail for the previous and, more importantly, now dead owners. No packages though fortunately. Legitimate mail, not just junk mail.

Got a Christmas card this year...

Impressive.

Sounds like the garbage is the winning answer.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I lived in a house that the previous owners dad's office would send a cooler of Omaha steaks for Christmas. She still lived in the neighborhood so I dropped them off on her porch the first two years. The third year, I said screw it and ate them. The 4th year I gave them to the yard guy. 5th year on I put them where Omaha steaks deserve to be in the trash.

Open them. Take the good stuff. Discard the rest.

The owner we bought from 17 years ago either bought the house from the estate of a deceased interior decorator or inherited it from him (I've forgotten the exact details).

So it's been two decades since the decorator lived here and he's been dead just as long or longer. And we still get catalogs and sample books sent to him here.

Mailing lists never die.

We bought a small building from a realtor & her daughter. We use it for an office/storage but don't get any mail there. About a year after the sale, we pull around the corner & see the realtor in the mailbox. She see us & drives off. Weird. We just zip tied the box shut & that took care of that.

After thinking about it though, we realized we never got anything there - no mail for them, no junk mail, etc.

It was owned by a Dr. before them. We still get deliveries of drug posters, calendars & samples sometimes. Not narcotics, obviously, but we won't have to buy single dose packs of advil ever again .

Depends on the previous owner.

Last owner of our house was a 4 star general in the Army. Truly amazing person who changed the lives of almost everyone he ever met. His wife is charming and will do anything for anyone.

I will take care of his and her mail as long as we get it. We call them in NC if anything looks important to make sure they get it.

On our house before that the previous owner had a software company. He wouldn't even give us the alarm system code when he left. Left the house dirty with stuff everywhere. His mail was tossed in the trash every day.
