How long do you want to ignore this user?
Sitting on a great parcel outside Lockhart and am looking for suggestions given current climate. Current home is an older doublewide that has reached the near end of its life. Looking to either remodel, to include all new flooring, new kitchen, new bathrooms, etc. versus building new further back on lot, and going with traditional home or barndo. Any suggestions? Also if new suggestions for a builder. Idea would be to live in current home while new one gets built, or remodel section at time and live in current home.

Remodeling a doublewide sounds like throwing good money after bad. I would rebuild.

Thanks that is where we are leaning, especially given we want to stay in it while whatever work is going on. 4 dogs makes finding a rental tough. Especially when 2 of them are large dogs.

Why can't a barndo be a forever home?

This is what we are doing. It also allows you to cut down on size of your future home because now you have a true guest house on the property.

I get that "barndominium" was originally just fun nickname for these structures, but the name really makes no sense.

A condo is something that is jointly owned by many people. The other is a barn that's been converted to live in (or a structure made to look like a barn designed to be lived in).

I think it's time for a new name!

/pointless rant.

I think the point of the name originally was there was a small apartment /condo living type space in a barn.

Not really as applicable to the ones with huge living spaces that are popular now, I know…

We finance barndominium construction the same as any other custom home construction. I have been to two events with barndo designers and builders. Two weeks ago I was at an event where over 500 people came from the local area and as far as 300 miles away to look at a $1.8MM barndominium. Once you step inside you wouldn't know if it was a metal clad building or a custom home built in town.

Appreciate all the feedback, we have decided the build new further back on the property while living in current is the way we want to go. Now wondering if anyone here has recommendations for builders of bother barndominium type homes as well as traditional stick built homes. This is in the Lockhart, Tx area.

I work for a builder and we did the exact same scenario you are talking about one of our customers in Lockhart. They lived in the double wide and we built the new house behind the double wide, then when done they sold the double wide and had it hauled out. You can email me at my handle at yahoo if you want some more information
