"The Foray" is a recent song but if you note it refers to Lamas as the time of the raid, this means it is likely that the song refers to a much older ballad, "The Battle of Otterburn" in which the Scottish leader is mortally wounded and requests that his body be buried in secrecy so as to not effect battle's moral.

Sorry, maybe Lammas Tide would be easier to look up.
It's an ancient "first harvest" celebration, about Aug 1.
And, yeah, it was traditional in some places to bring to church
a loaf made from the new harvest.
