Dad and I try to play golf once a month. Usually his course or my course (briarcrest) here in Bryan.

Wanted to do something a little more special this week since its my bday on sunday. Wanted to do pine dunes friday afternoon, but its suppose to rain. I ended up booking a tee time at Golf Club at Star Ranch in Hutto.

Has anyone here ever played this course? Is it anything special? Worth the drive? If not i guess I could just play the a&m course, unless any of you know of a better course we should play at within an 1.5 hours away.

I suggest making the trek to Stephen F Austin Golf Course in San Felipe.

It's a great little track adjacent to the state park that's always in decent shape and inexpensive. Always quite and secluded and never crowded.

Worth the 1.25 hr trip from Bryan.

SFA is good, but $75 bucks on the weekend and only 16 holes are good. The other two just opened for play shouldn't be. really rough shape still.

Star Ranch is good, but I can think of better to play.

eta: Golf club of Houston, Wilderness in lake Jackson are two that immediately come to mind

Didn't know they had opened the new holes as last time we were out there we replayed 9 and 1.

I'll also throw Cypresswood Traditions in the mix.

Wilderness is a great suggestion but that's a haul from Bryan

Starr Ranch was fine, it's been a year since I've seen. Other thoughts:
-Hyatt Wolfdancer-Bastrop
-High Meadow Ranch
-Blackhorse

Or cozy up to jj79 and ask to get on Houston Oaks. Expensive but special

Not sure about the drive but Kissing Tree in San Marcos is another great course.

Played Star Ranch 2 years ago and it was great. Got rained on towards end of the round but otherwise a really fun experience.

Ooo. Blackhorse and high meadow ranch look like great courses too….

Hm. Okay I need to decide between high meadow, blackhorse, and cypresswood now.

Stick to the Tradition course. Cypress course is nothing special and gets a lot more traffic.

Have played both Blackhorse courses in the last month and although they're both in decent shape would prefer Highmeadow Ranch over either.

High Meadow and Tradition at Cypresswood are better than the Blackhorse courses. High Meadow is borderline spectacular for the Houston area.

The reviews for high meadow sound great, but when i google and see the photos it doesnt look all that special. Do the pictures just not do it justice?

Cypresswood has a really nice video of their course and it looks amazing in the video. I feel like im gonna go to cypresswood and be underwhelmed cause it probably doesnt look as nice as the video, and if i go to high meadows ill be overwhelmed because it looks nicer than the photos i saw of it.

Am i crazy? High meadows looks average based on the gallery photos

Not sure if you know or not, High Meadow Ranch allows you to play for free on the day of your birthday.

I may be a little biased but pictures don't do High Meadow much justice. It's always been one of my favorite courses to play and it just so happened my career path has blessed me with the opportunity to spend every single day on this golf course.
Gig ‘em and God bless

Pictures don't do High Meadow justice. Every hole isn't spectacular, but they have 4 holes off the top of my head that could be signature holes on most courses in town… 6, 13, 14 and 18.

Cypresswood Tradition is a close 2nd to me. The course and layout are great with the conditions not being quite as prime as High Meadow is.

You can't really go wrong, but I'd give the slight edge to HM.

Good to know. Changed my tee time to high meadows. I think its going to be near impossible to play in 25 mph winds friday. Should be interestinf

How was High Meadow Ranch? Interested to hear what you thought. We played a scramble there this past Thursday, I had never seen the full 18 holes. Nice golf course and it was in good shape!
