My irons are 20 years old and looking for new ones. I'm lucky if I break 100 but I feel like it's time for an upgrade. Anyone have any suggestions for a casual golfer?

- Budget?
- Swing speed? (how far do you hit your 7i and driver?)
- Are you a digger or picker?
- Are you young & reasonable fit, or fighting father time?
- Is your issue with irons distance, consistency, launch?

- What are your goals?:
A. Have fun as a casual golfer: Just get something to maximize the swing I have
B. Improve my game: get something I can grow into
C. Get some sticks that the guys in my scramble won't haze me about

Answering the above will help give you some informed recommendations besides "get fit".

Any of the Ping game improvement irons in the past few iterations are good too. G400, G410, G425.

I don't care what Brand or model you put in the blank, that is such a ridiculous thing to say. No one club suits everyone. And there are a number of great clubs manufacturers and models out there.

Thanks guy. I meant bang for your buck as a place to start, it's not close…and it's not. I didn't say go buy these right now and you'll hit them perfectly, but bang for your buck-wise, you'd be hard pressed to find more value in a used set of irons than p790s for the OP. He should check them out and see if they fit his eye and his swing…that unsaid part was obvious to those of us with half a brain. Thanks for assuming you know **** about me though. Moving along.

Where did you make that leap in logic? I think somebody got their wee little feelings hurt.

And I think someone is a typical TA poster clown that sees a post and immediately thinks "hey I don't agree with that, cmon boys let's get him" and proceeds to instant d ewshbaggery. Insert kissy face emoji here.

Just don't buy the Ping G425s. I've been kicking around the idea of playing regularly again and could use a GI iron for some more distance. In a minimal amount of research, I've seen more cracked faces on G425s than I have ever seen in an iron. R/golf has a number of threads on it.

1) take a few lessons first. Will save future headaches and frustrations
2) get fitted after you know how to swing a club. This was my mistake. I got fitted before taking lessons. I got 3* upright lie on all my clubs and bought expensive af p790's with steelfiber shafts. If i had taken lessons first, probably wouldnt have needed all the bells and whistles
3) id get a used set of game improvement irons honestly if you arent looking to get fitted and buy nice new irons later down the road. For your level where you are now, i dont think its essential to have the next greatest club for you to play better.

Lessons will improve your game more than anything else.

Buy what makes you happy. If you struggle to break 100, I highly recommend you get lessons. If you develop a consistent swing, you can play with just about any set of irons. But after taking the lessons it clubs that will help you break 90. Then more lessons. Get a good as your athletic ability. Then buy the clubs that make you want to play golf……every day.

Consider getting fitted at Club Champion! It made a big difference in my game and I can't recommend it enough.

Also, there has been a ton of innovation in golf clubs the past twenty years. I think upgrading will help you a lot.

Replaced 25+ yo irons last fall and I tried everything available. I convinced myself the mizuno hot metals were going to be the ones based on the reviews. I was about to give up when they brought out the Callaway Rogue ST Max….. they make the game enjoyable again!

Holy moly the lofts on irons have gotten stronger in the last decade.

My 7i from 2011 is 35*

Most 7i I'm seeing now are between 28-30* with Titleist T400 hitting 26*.

Yep.

The two sets I have been playing:

Mizuno MP33 blades: 7 iron is 36*; PW is 48* (clubs from 2000)

Srixon ZX7: 7 iron is 32*; PW is 46*

The Srixons are basically a full club stronger from 5-9 iron. And these are forged "players irons" -- not "game improvement" irons.

My Mizuno JPX 921 Tours are 34* on the 7i... The regular Hot metal versions of mine are 29*

I think many people are obsessed with distance on their clubs, including their irons which is idiotic to me. They go try out a 7 iron and see the distance and say "I have to have these!"

I tried out the (hasn't even come out yet) new big bertha irons at Golftec last week and I was a bit shocked the 7i I was trying out went 196 dead straight with a pretty effortless swing. Then looked at the specs and saw their 7 iron is at 27* which is what my 5i is on my tours.

Your average PW these days in these new iron sets is 45*. Used to they were normally around 48* and people would have a 52 and 56 to round out their wedges. A lot of sets now include a 50* approach(gap) wedge due to the 45* PW's.

got roasted by my regular golf group for calling an A wedge an attack wedge last weekend...even though it's a term used by a lot of the club manufacturers. Attack/Approach both proper terms

After said roasting, I "attacked" with my A wedge within 3 ft from 92 yards out and flipped them the hell off and blew them a kiss

OP. I dealt with this a few years ago. Take some lessons, THEN figure out what works best for your new swing. I wish I'd done it the way this suggests.
