Played it (1-8) twice on Sunday. Chilly at 820 but was a perfect day.
Been to Bandon annd Cabot. Wild spring dunes lives up to every thing you'd expect from Mike Keiser. Course is wonderful . Our caddie was one of the better ones I've ever had (will wenty if you're into requesting one). He is a regular at sand valley and I plan on requesting him there later this year when I go.
The $70 is a bargain. They treat you so great there and seem so appreciative for coming.
There's a little halfway house on 5 green and they have free sausage wraps drinks and snacks
They said the whole course is done but they want the grass to take a few more weeks
I called the other day trying to book for end of February and there was nothing available. She did tell me to call back the week before and week of because there are oftentimes cancellations
Went yesterday for a preview play round. If you can make it happen, go.
It is already outstanding with just the few holes they have open, but its going to be amazing when its complete. I haven't been to Sand Valley or Bandon yet so I can't compare it to those. But it doesn't have the feel of any other course I've played in Texas.
Place is excellent, went out 2 weeks ago and did the opening loop. Doak's course needs a year (maybe two) to fully grow in to play the way it's meant to which is extremely normal for new courses. I played High Pointe in Northern MI last summer (another Doak course, really cool story) and felt as if it was similar land. The C/C course is being cleared right now and they're shooting for it being open next year. Could play hole 6 all day out there. Caddie was telling me the back 9 is much more dramatic and hard. They're going to change the loop to 9-18 (20 holes) at some point in the next couple months and late summer/early fall it'll fully be open. If you have the time and $100 (green fee plus forecaddie fee) it's a bargain.
It's a Doak so yes. I got Doaked down but had plenty of experience on his courses so I knew generally what to expect. It's very playable but have to be in the right spots.
If I remember correctly they said roughly three more months of preview play. Was chopping it up with the starter at the end of the day and he said the best time to call is a day or two in advance. They had called me Tuesday with an opening and I went to play on Friday. Out of 40 total players they allocate for each day, only 31 showed up the day I was there. He said the tee sheet is never full due to late cancellations.
Here are some of my favorite pictures I took. First one is the tee shot on 1, about a 50 foot elevation change from the tips to the fairway. Second one is the par 3 third hole. Goes over a ravine that must've been close to 100 foot deep. Last photo is the tee shot on 6, easily the coolest part of the course in my opinion. Hard to tell from the photo but there is a large elevation change and just a massive clearing in the pines where you can see multiple other holes. It's also where the free sausage wraps and drinks are. Make sure you get one because they are phenomenal.
