I contemplated whether or not sharing this story from a JV girls' golf tournament I took my team to yesterday. However, the more I think about, the more I feel I have to share. I will start off saying that this story is 100% factual. No embellishment at all.

Story time from the chronicles of a JV golf tournament:

9AM shotgun start. Before carting my best two JV players I direct my 5th player with simple directions on how to get to her starting hole. "You walk down this cart path to that red flag. Then you take a left. Your tee box will be about 100 yards away."' After I drop my first two players off I decided to immediately go check to see if she got to the right place. As I'm driving up to the tee box I realize she hadn't so I tell her playing partners, who had already teed off, to wait just a moment while I find her. They graciously waited. When I get her to the teebox, she hit right away and ended up with a bogey on a par five which I was pretty proud of, all things considered.

However, the point of the story I wanted to get to had to do with one of her playing partners on that hole. After I drove ahead to spot my player's tee shot, I watch her playing partner hit her second shot. It seemed like she had a decent swing, and when she made contact, I was like, "That looks like it'll go about 150 yards." But, as I watched the ball fly it kind of looked like when it reached its apex that it started to go backwards. Weird. What was even more weird was that her third shot did the same thing. A few shots later I noticed, she was having a hard time finding her ball so I drove back to help her find it. I found it pretty quickly and immediately realized why the ball seemed to be super spinny. The ball she was using was not a normal golf ball, but in fact, it was a whiffle golf ball…..

I felt bad for the girl, instructed the other girls to go to their ball as I told her to wait a moment while they moved far enough away so I could tell her of her blunder. After I told her, she replied, "Yeah, I noticed after my third shot, but I didn't know what to do." I stood there in disbelief, wondering how did it take her that long? How did she not notice when she picked the ball up to put it on the tee?

lol you can't make this stuff up!

And, slightly in her defense it was a solid whiffle golf ball and not one with holes in it.

I want to see the pga of america's ruling tips on this one. "What happens if you accidentally start play with something other than a golf ball"

That's pretty good. I've got a similar story.

I played HS golf at an HISD school in a division with only schools in it that weren't low-income disadvantage etc etc. So with that said us and the other school always won our district tourney with everyone on our teams shooting 100+.

Well one year we show up to the district tourney and I get paired up with a guy who's never played golf in his life. Turns out he's a basketball player and the basketball coach bought him and the entire basketball team thrift store clubs and told them if they played they'd get to miss two days of school so they all said yes. Players miss school and coach gets his stipend bonus for coaching golf.

He hits his tee shot off #1 as you'd expect and as he gets up to his ball 30 yards in front of the tee box he bends down to pick it up and put it on a tee. His coach has to run up in the cart and tell him he can't do that. He was shocked he had to hit the ball off the ground.

Can't remember what he shot that day but it was brutal. I'll never forget that.

That is an awesome story. Poor girl. Glad you said something to her. I too wonder what the penalty is for that!!!

I think that classifies as the wrong ball, but do you have to go to the teebox or drop there? I'd imagine the tee box.

It's actually an easy ruling.

4.2a
In making each stroke, a player must use a ball that conforms to the requirements in the Equipment Rules.
Penalty for Making Stroke in Breach of Rule 4.2a: Disqualification.

Since this is a JV tournament, I would likely say replace the ball and finish the round. The loss of distance was her penalty. If it was a varsity tournament, unfortunately her day is done.

Great story.

My last 2 years in High School, we had Beaumont Central in our district. Same story as above as the basketball coach asked his favorite 5 kids/athletes if they wanted 2 days off school.

They rolled in and he threw 5 golf bags out of the back of the bus. Right after the bags came flying out, he dropped a trash can full of golf clubs out of the bus. A free for all ensued.

The guy teeing off fourth for them started looking around at the clubs in other people's bags. He pointed to a putter in a competitor's bag and asked what it was. So the kid told him what it was for and the Central kid, realizing he had 10 drivers and a wedge but no putter, says S***! and goes sprinting down the first hole. He runs 420 yards down to the first green… grabs a putter out of his buddy's bag and sprints the whole way back. Not even breathing hard, he explained to us that his buddy had 7 putters in his bag. Damnedest thing I ever saw on the golf course.

as a current HS girls and boys coach, I have stories as well, such as the 4-person girls scramble with double bogey as the max and one team score (not mine) maxed out at 36 over, 108.

The poor coach was with them for every shot. The amount of patience that coach had was incredible.

Another story- the school told me I need to carry a first aid kit with me when I go to events. "ok, but I don't think I have ever really needed it - what could possibly happen?" First time I brought it I used it 4 times. Gauze, band aids, sprays, ace bandages - a whole mess. amazes me what happens at these things.

My first year, my varsity was made of 2 decent girls and 3 JV type players. 2 of the JV like players were best friends. One of them asked the other to hit a ball to her from 30 yards away in the midst of practice. So the other obliged..... And, instead of a chip shot she skulled one right at her (probably the straightest shot she hit all year). The other girl who had very little athleticism put a hand on the ball, hitting her right below a ring on one of her fingers. That sucker swelled up so quick, glad I had my wits about me and told her to take her ring off right away. I don't know man.....high schoolers.....I was one once, but never did anything so stupid as I see golfers do.

As a follow up… the guy I played with from Central was an enormous white dude (6'5 230)… I found out later from my baseball buddies that he was the 3rd baseman.

We get done with the first hole and he's chopped his way to a 10 or 11. I'm keeping his card and I ask him what he had. He says, "I don't know, 6 or 7?" I said, "7 sounds good."

I played with a bunch of 1A kids once. I think 9 or double par was the limit. I was the only kid out of 4 to reach the green and putt out on a par 5. Everyone else got to 9 before they made it on the green

One of the holes was backed up to a pasture with some cows. We had to wait on the tee box so some of the kids started hitting practice balls into the pasture. Of course they were so bad so didnt even get close to hitting a cow.

I also once had a kid try to hit a ball in the hole with the end of his club like a cue stick in pool. He laid on the ground to do it. Only a few inches away but still missed.

In a high school district round (a few rural 3a schools mixed in) this guy in my group managed to hit the ball with the heel of his driver and it flew directly into his shin. He dropped like a sack of potatoes. They carted him off and took him to the hospital. Found out later that the ball cracked his bone.

we were in our District event last year, and we are petty much in to Regionals barring some disaster. Well, the walk from 17 to 18 at Shadowglen in Manor was long enough and we are always trying to keep pace so we were shuttling players from 17 to 18. My player had a pull cart -

(sidebar - people please stop trying to hold the pull cart and let it roll to the side and/or behind the golf cart. It doesn't work very well. Instead, load the front wheel into the bag well and then tilt it up to the cart and tie it in)

- and I went to load it up..."Coach, I got it I will just hold it here with me"... Me: "Why don't we just load it on the back?"..."Coach, LET'S GO, I got it" (typical teen voice).

I said, ok - and he is awkwardly holding the pull cart in the floor of the cart where he is sitting and it's just a mess, half collapsed. Whatever. As he gets out on the 18th tee, something was wrong and it sort of either collapsed more or tried to open up and the leverage of all the moving parts basically filleted about 3" long and 1/2" wide a good layer/chunk of skin right off his shin. It was gross.

So here I am, on the 18th tee, just needing him to make a 7 or better to advanced and he is losing it seeing the blood...I spray, gauze up, tape up and ace bandage up his entire lower leg. He makes par. What a day.

I mean he could have putted with one of those other clubs, but this story would be better if he had a bunch of putters and a wedge.

So true, but I didn't write the story… I was just a befuddled witness, in a heart-warming sort of way.
