This, forever I just used what my Garmin Golf app said, then when I went to play in some Saturday money games with a neighbor with a group of dudes I didn't know and they were using the GHIN app to plug in everyone's handicaps to get course handicaps and figure two man team handicaps, I was kinda embarrassed not to be in the GHIN system.

If you're into golf enough, you should have an official one.

I play a number of tournaments and events every year that requires a "validated handicap", so I use GHIN and pay the yearly fee. However, if you're just a enthusiast/weekend golfer that wants to know your handicap, there are a number of free applications that are out there for you.

I've been using SwingU for rangefinding and scorekeeping. It also tracks an "unofficial" handicap that should be fine for a friendly game.

For comparison, I just checked my GHIN account and compared it to my SwingU calculated handicap. They are within 0.3 of each other. That's close enough for most folks.

$50/year is the cheapest golf-related thing you'll spend money on this year.

GHIN. For all the reasons people said. Even if you aren't a regular somewhere, if you get in a game anywhere you really need to be on GHIN.
