Howdy all,

Just wanted to pick the brains of the experts. My 12 year old son decided he wanted to play golf for his middle school team this spring. We started him out with a set of hand me down clubs that we received from a friend that sort of fit him better than my 25 year old set. He likes it enough that I think he's going to stick with it as his spring sport.

That being said, I need to get him a better set of clubs and don't really know where to start. Not sure how to find what length he needs. Don't know what to look for and what to stay away from. Not looking to break the bank so I'm going to be shopping used and try to see what I can find.

Any advice one what I should be looking for and how to make sure I'm getting something that halfway fits him? Just an FYI, h's about 5'8" currently and grows like a damn weed.

I'd honestly go the takomo route with the 101's. There is an online fitting process on there website where you can put in height, etc and it will suggest shaft, length, lie, etc. Not perfect but will be plenty close enough for a kid learning imo. Also, for the price I dont think they can be beat.

How tall do you expect him to get? You trying to get a set for now and then another set when he finishes growing? Or one set and done? I assume at 12 they aren't done growing. Mine aren't there yet.

I'm 6'4" and I'm guessing he's going to be be my size or better by the time he gets out of high school if he follows my growth pattern. I figure getting him something that's a little on the long side now so he can grow into them and then if he keeps at it once fully grown get him a set that fits him once he's near the end of high school.

If he is just starting out, look at US kids. He may not have the strength or swing speed for adult irons. Us kids has a fitting chart to get the right set. Other good junior brands is Flynn's (what my junior plays) and ping prodi-g. Let me know if you have other junior golf questions. Tons of tourney series out there to help with development

I second that Takomo 101's would be a great start for a 12 year old junior golfer. The shafts can be changed out if he starts to have a growth spurt. They have a decent selection of shafts in a variety of flexes. But at his age the KBS Tour Lite in regular flex is probably the best option. My son was a junior golfer and he used the lite version until his junior year in highschool.
