I played Cedar Crest (CC) 30 years ago. It was a dump. Some friends invited me to join them yesterday. I was reluctant, remembering the course of 30 years ago, but I decided to go. What a joy it was.
First, just a fun track. I didn't recall this from 30 years ago but it is a Tillinghast design. I didn't know we had one in Dallas. It also hosted the 1927 PGA Championship.
Besides all of that, several interesting and fun holes. A couple of tee boxes you have great views of Downtown Dallas. The tee boxes, while not perfect, are significantly better than Tenison or even Brookhaven CC. The fairways are in immaculate condition. The greens are still recovering from punching and sanding. I'm guessing in another week or so they will be pretty nice.
The clubhouse is fairly new, obviously new from my visit of 30 years ago. And it is staffed with nice folks. One more positive, maybe because of its location it is not nearly as crowded of it's more well known sister courses.
Two negatives: 1. The sand traps; I will never understand jerk offs that don't rake traps after their use. It seems as if not a single golfer had ever raked a trap. The 18th green trap was laughable. I suggest management place more rakes per trap (there was basically one per trap) and they should be the long poled wider rake type. The short pole small rakes makes it more of a chore. 2. Just not a fan of gas golf carts. If you're a walker, great course for walking like most old courses are like that. I think there were more walkers than cart riders.
In summary, if you're playing in Dallas give this course a try. I found it super enjoyable. I hope its conditions hold up through the summer and I didn't just happen upon it after a nice and wet spring.
