Saw the the PGA is going to be eliminating the starting strokes format of the Tour Championship this year. How would you fix it?

There needs to be some advantage for finishing in the top of the points standings. I would like to see some kind of stroke play / match play combo. Maybe take top 90 in points standings. Top 26 guaranteed getting into 3 day stroke play final (say Fri, Sat and Sun). Remaining 64 play match play on Wed / Thu (seeding based on FEDEX points) to whittle down to 8 who make the 3-day stroke play field as well. Strong 34 man field on the weekend with eight match play qualifiers being on heaters. Lots of incentive to get into that top 26 in the weeks leading up to the Tour Championship to avoid match play (or actually get into match play if outside the top 90).

I don't necessarily mind the concept of strokes off depending on ranking, however they took it too far and the benefit was too top heavy.

My answer isn't realistic because of TV, but i would like to see a 2 day stroke play tournament followed by match play. The top 2-5 players from the season long standings are exempt from the stroke play with the next 25-40 guys playing 2 days of stroke play. After that, the top 16 players, including those exempt from the stroke play, go to a seeded match play with the top players getting to pick who they play each round. #1 Scottie gets to pick from the remaining 15 guys who he plays, then Rory picks next, etc. Same process repeats after each round with 2 matches Sat and Sunday to determine the champ.

I get why the TOUR did their handicapped leadership... they wanted their best players to be there at the end. But that doesn't always work out that way in pro sports. Making it to the top 30 for the chance at the match play is an incredible accomplishment. Thats a small percentage of the number of players with a tour card. Much smaller than percentage of teams that make the playoffs in any other sport.

My answer would be something along the lines of the NCAA championships. Stroke play for the 30 players for 36 holes or something and top 12 make it to a match play bracket.

That would be some incredibly dramatic golf TV.

But instead we get 72 holes of stroke play. Blah. If they are going to keep it this way, it should be fewer than 30 people who make it. Right now Michael Kim, Jacob Bridgeman and Ryan Gerard are all in the 30.

I like the stroke play/match play format. I think you could exempt the top 4 from stroke play, then play 36 or even 54 holes of stroke play to qualify four more by Friday evening. Seed all eight players and play quarterfinals and semifinals on Saturday, then a 36 hole final on Sunday.

I get it that it is a lot of golf, but if I recall correctly, I think it is comparable to the Dell Match Play.

Get rid of it. Award the tour championship to the player who achieves the most points over the season.

The stroke play/match play concept would be a ratings boom. Every time there's a match play event (Ryder Cup/President's Cup) it is must see tv. I like exempting the top 6 from stroke play, have the remaining 44 players in the top 50 do 2 days of stroke play to get to 10, then seed the top 16 and go from there to match play. Would be riveting.
