One of my vendors is hosting my at Red Ledges in Utah in a couple months. I had planned on renting clubs (which they might cover but I don't expect them to) but we're going to be playing multiple rounds so thought I might just go ahead and buy a travel case and use shipsticks. I'd only use the case a couple times a year maybe. Is it better to go hardside or soft? Any brand rec's for a moderate budget? Or maybe I'm just better off renting a set. At least then I could blame my terrible score on unfamiliar clubs.

What's the value of having "not my clubs" as an excuse?

If you're playing more than once on a trip, skip the rentals.

If you're going to get a travel case, please just get the hard sided one. I've had both, and the soft cases aren't protecting jack diddly.

Get the hard case for peace of mind. And since you're using Shiip Sticks, you don't have to worry about it fitting inside your car.

My hard case has been great - only downside in my opinion is they're kind of a pain in the ass to store and if you're traveling with a group you may need to size up on the rental car especially if others in the group also have hard cases.

Soft case from the marketplace. Check it with the airline.

Soft case with wheels paired with a club caddy and towels stuffed in the top around all your clubheads has never failed me.

I've been relatively happy with my ClubGlove travel bag but get a little envious when my buddies roll up with their Sun Mountain ClubGliders with legs.

Sun Mountain Club Glider here. I always use that with a rod to the top of the case inside. I always take off my driver head and wrap it in a towel in golf bag and I'm good. I hate traveling with hard case people since they take up so much room.

Yep, same with my CG - stick + remove woods heads + towels around the irons. On my most recent trip, though, UA must have smashed my bag pretty good to bend the leg on my stand bag to the point the mechanism did not function properly.

I always use the Velcro straps on my bag to keep the legs from moving.

I do, too. I think they just smacked it on something or smashed it on the corner of another bag.

I've had a buddy check is bag straight up with just a rain hood on. It worked with no broken clubs lol.

Love my Club Glove Collegeiate. Looks sharp, stands up when you need it to, rolls great, comes with the stiff arm.

As an organizer of golf trips, dont be the guy who shows up with a hard case.

I just cut a piece of 1" pvc an inch longer than my driver. Seems to work just fine.

Hard case. I never worry about my clubs when I'm flying. I have an SKB.

Only downside is the case takes up a lot of room in your rental vehicle at your destination. Unless you're getting an SUV or some type of van, it's going to ride in the back seat of a sedan. I'm not bothered enough by that to go back to a soft case.

Take your clubs. I bought an unused maroon A&M Club Glove collegiate years ago on ebay for a steal; seemed like it was one of our players needing some cash. Traveled a ton and never an issue. Remove wood heads and add stiff arm

Got to connect your ClubGlove to your luggage handle. Can pull both using one finger.

Your buddies will be envious of you.

I have a hard shell case and use it frequently. Wouldn't trust a soft case. You know how they treat luggage right?

Bough a hard case in 1998 for $125, still use it. Probably made 50+ trips with it.

***eta***

I have also loaned it out a bunch so it's probably made closer to 70 trips

Cam y'all help me with size? I'm using a callaway 14 divider cart bag. Just using club glove as an example would i need the traveler or traveler pro? It looks to me like the pro but for an extra hundred not sure.

This one from Ogio keeps coming up as well

Since you have a couple months, I would try to find a club glove pro on eBay…$450 seems steep, but I believe it's the best for your bag.

I think you probably need the pro. Mine is a collegiate which I think is equivalent to the traveler. I have a stand bag which is pretty good size and fits well, but with a cart bag, I think you'd want bigger.

Another vote for a soft case, Club Glove or Sun Mountain.

I wouldn't want to deal with a hard case in a rental.

This is just me but I would buy the traveler and hope that your cart bag would fit. I bet it would but probably a tight fit. If it doesn't fit, find a used stand or carry bag on FB Marketplace or eBay. It'll be cheaper than the $100 you have to pay for the pro.

Downside of renting clubs on occasion is that it makes me want to get new clubs. I always seem to play better with the rentals

Dude, how old are your clubs that the rentals are better than your own?

you know if you play an upscale course the rentals are usually whatever brand they rep's latest and greatest right?

A few years ago I played Ko Olina in Hawaii and the "rentals" were TaylorMade M2's which hadn't even come out on the market yet.

Yeah we played Pelican Hill in Newport Beach for a work thing last week and they had Qi35 rentals and last year in Ireland we played a course the week after the Women's Irish open and the sets were the AI smoke.

This isn't a bad idea. Been wanting a stand bag to take to the range anyway. Cart bag can be pretty heavy and doesn't have legs

What are your regular sticks? Usually rentals lean pretty heavy to the game improvement category. Maybe you just need something more forgiving.

That makes zero sense. If your argument is you can cram more soft cases into a trunk, that's exactly why I won't use them. They aren't protecting the clubs.

Hard cases aren't any bigger or take up more room. The last thing I'm going to be is the guy who spends money on something that then requires more effort and money to actually protect my clubs. The point is to ensure my clubs make it intact to play golf. It's not about club fashion.
