Hard cases are both bigger and take up more room. And if you are cramped you can always take clubs out of a soft case and fold it up. Hard cases are awful with rent cars.

You're right about this.

But, when I'm packing my clubs for a trip I plop them in my hard case and close it up. No extra padding. No buying or fashioning a stiff arm. No removing wood heads. No double checking to see if anything got bent or crushed when I get to where I'm going.

Most of my golf travel is just me and my wife, so the size of the rental vehicle doesn't matter. Or if I'm on a guys trip we have a big van or SUV that accommodates the case. The minor inconvenience of the hard case size is worth it to me.

100% this.

Downside of renting clubs on occasion is that it makes me want to get new clubs. I always seem to play better with the rentals

Dude, how old are your clubs that the rentals are better than your own?

you know if you play an upscale course the rentals are usually whatever brand they rep's latest and greatest right?

A few years ago I played Ko Olina in Hawaii and the "rentals" were TaylorMade M2's which hadn't even come out on the market yet.

This cost me as well.

Either junk clubs from the lost and found, or the newest on the market.

No kidding. Didn't know the hard case crowd was so opinionated

Not so opinionated, just have witnessed baggage handlers in action. Want my clubs to be safe and sound

Wrapped bubble wrap around the club heads put on the rain cover, then put an army duffel bag over the top and clipped it down, then wrapped some gorilla tape around the army bag. Worked! Looked pretty ugly but it got the job done from Seattle to Houston.

The guys who need to use their clubs for a living seem to trust the soft cases. I think the fear of damage is overblown.

Well, those guys can also get their damaged clubs replaced for free. And for the top guys, they fly private and don't have their bags manhandled and tossed all over the place.

I have the club glove pro and use it all the time.

Plenty of room for an extra pair of schools and other crap I might need.

Bad analogy, those guys fly private.

No chance. Obviously some do, but a lot more touring pros fly commercial than private.

I was sitting next to Rico Hoey in the united club at IAH a few months ago. I should have asked him what travel bag his clubs were in.

I've traveled with both, so here are my thoughts:

SKB Hard case
Pros:
Complete protection - even if baggage handlers tried to run over it I'd be confident that my clubs were protected
Durable shell - the material may get scratched, but because of the hardened plastic it didnt bother me
Cons:
Heavier than the soft cases - so potentially less items can be crammed in for the 50 lb weight limit
As mentioned, is awkward fitting into some rental cars or trunks. I usually rent a pickup truck or SUV, so this doesn't bother me as much but its still a real characteristic
When pulling it through the airport, whether overhand or underhand, after a while it annoys my wrist. Its not major pain, but its just kind of annoying.

Club Glove
Pros:
Lighter, so depending on the size one went with, they can pack more items in and meet the 50 lb weight limit
The TRS system. Absolutely love this - I connect my carry on, luggage bag and golf bag together and can pull them with one hand through the airport. Once you get used to connecting them and maneuvering them out of escalators or elevators, you really appreciate the convenience of the system
While length can be challenging for some rental cars, there is some flexibility in maneuvering the bag around if necessary
You have color options and the personalized name plates are a nice touch
Cons:
Reasonable protection - While it is unlikely that clubs will be damaged, in especially egregious circumstances its possible they can be. A stiff arm is included, and you can remove club heads or wrap with towels and use other forms of protection, whereas with the SKB you dont have to take the extra cautionary steps
The material is durable, but I anticipate over time that it will have more scratches, gouging will take place, etc.
On the more expensive side - but when I got the set I planned to have it for a long time
