Proud dad here, my daughter's high school team, Cy Woods, won their district tournament as at team and my daughter also won the individual overall for the 2nd year in a row. They are playing their regional tournament at Eagle Bluff in Bullard, TX up near Tyler. That course has elevation changes which we don't see a ton of in our area. Coach asked me if I knew of any course within 50 miles of Cypress, TX that has elevation change that they can practice on.

Does anyone have any ideas where they might be able to practice?

Apparently Wildcat has elevation changes, but I have never been there. One thing that I thought of as was Panorama out in Conroe, that course has 3 nines and some holes out there have elevation changes. I would appreciate any ideas so I can tell our coach.

Requirements:
within 50 miles of Cypress (northwest Houston)
public course they can get on

Can they not go up for a weekend and get in some practice rounds on the actual course?

Maybe stay at a camp ground?

They do get a practice round before the day before the tournament but she would like for them to practice before that. The tough part is the get a practice round on a Tuesday (late) that they have to walk and then a 2 day tournament, so really 3 days of walking.

Not sure how they will do this because the boys are playing Mon and Tues and the girls on Wed and Thurs, so how do the girls practice if they boys are on the course on Tues? This is region 2 so 16 teams (top 2 teams in each district) and 2 medalist from each district so 16 more girls. I can see them starting practice rounds around 2 pm ish but that is lots of team and players to practice if you start late.

Also AgLa, Eagle Bluff is a completely private course so they can't just go up there, plus there are some UIL rules they have to follow that I think prohibit going up there prior.

chatgpt says this

1. Wildcat Golf Club (Highlands & Lakes)
3.5Golf
Best overall for elevation in Houston area
  • About 45-50 miles from Cypress
  • Elevation changes up to ~100 feet (rare for this region)
  • Highlands course = dramatic tee shots + rolling terrain
  • Lakes course = elevation + water combo
This is honestly the closest thing to "hill country golf" you'll find near Houston. Tons of elevated tee boxes and skyline views.

Agreed, those who've not played would be surprised at the elevation changes this close to Houston. Also, it's a really fun and challenging layout, and always in good shape.

Third for Wildcat. Good luck to your girl and her team!
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

Panorama would help, but Eagles Bluff is far hillier than anything you find down here. One of the hilliest courses I've ever played. Lost Pines is probably the closest comp I can think of, and that's a trek from Cypress.

It has been a long long time, but I remember the old Stephen Austin course off I10 had some elevation. That might be in the radius.
The Ravens whatever off 45 in Huntsville looks like it has some elevation change from the interstate, but never played it. Should be close to the radius.

The Huntsville course has a decent chunk of elevation, but nothing on the scale of Eagles Bluff. 3-4 holes that you're hitting up to the green or dropping down 20', but the rest is swampland and surprisingly flat or gradually sloped.

Bearkats Club former Ravens Nest would be a good practice round!

High Meadow Ranch has some terrain, but as others have said… nothing as dramatic as East Texas.

Highland Pines is in the same boat as HMR.

Expand your radius and go to ColoVista/Lost Pines in Bastrop.
