Interesting choice for a 45 year old going through a bit of a resurgence right now. Seems like a risky move for a guy with probably only a few years left of high level play to throw in with a car company's entry into golf. Hope it works out for him but will be interesting to follow.

I'm sure it's a nice retirement check for Justin. But with all the engineering prowess at McLaren I have to think they can design a golf club.

Kinda meh overall. The blades look ok, but the cavity backs look terrible.

No doubt but so can Titleist, Callaway, Taylor made, etc. and these finely tuned guys still generally have a preference among them. His game seems to be in a really good place right now and guys rarely make changes when they're playing as well as he is. Just a little surprising to me.

I agree - BIG CHECK is all I can assume.

He's made almost 85 million dollars just playing golf before you add in the sponsorships and endorsements. I doubt he'd risk his sunset years playing great golf for just another check unless he really believes in the product. At which point he most likely negotiated for equity.

Here's a little more from the MGS article this morning. He's an investor and been working on this for a couple of years apparently.

Quote:

The other rumor is that former Titleist wedge designer JP Harrington would also be part of the McLaren team. He did share McLaren's Instagram post last month with the caption, "The next chapter." Additionally, it was rumored that at least one former TaylorMade employee is involved with McLaren. That has also proved true, as today's press release comes courtesy of former TaylorMade Marketing Director Ryan Lauder, who is now Chief Marketing Officer at McLaren Golf

Yeah I assume these arent some new clubs, but rather just stamped and his former ones with a different look.

Apparently they are designed and built by Miura. So probably spot on for whatever he wants.

similar to tiger and his "nike" clubs which were basically mizunos stamped with the swoosh

The cavity backs look like something you would see in the Goodwill golf club bucket. "What kind of club is that?"

I've never found anything there, but have heard of some $10 Scotty Cameron putters being found after some poor widow drops off her late husband's golf bag.

Rose's first hole, a par 5, he had major issues. Not saying it's the clubs, but it's just kinda funny. The announcers even commented on the new clubs in relation to his multiple bad shots.

Could certainly just be a bad round but probably not the start he or McLaren were looking for.

F1 is in Miami this weekend so makes sense that they're announcing it now.

And Cadillac just joined F1 racing this season so maybe a little friendly banter to have it done at a golf tournament sponsored by Cadillac. Probably just coincidental and lucky that the schedule matched up.

Tiger had 42 wins in the 8 years directly after switching to Nike after 2001.

His were the same as before with a nike stamp. This was well known. Someone already mentioned it on the thread. Took 4+ years to get to "new". Also went from the Tiger Slam in 2000-2001 to major-less in 2003 and 2004

Not just that... but any argument built on comps vs. Tiger are kind of ill-fated to begin with. He was 1 of 1. Not sure you can take any of his results and apply them to others.

Exactly. An absolutely transcendent all-time player played in slightly more modified clubs after 5 years of working with a Nike with unprecedented resources being put against it. And even then, he didn't win over the next 2-3 years like he did the previous 2-3 and lost his #1 ranking along the way

But remind me, was that during one of the swing changes? Honestly don't remember.

He was always tinkering, so the answer is generally yes on anything Tiger. I'm not blaming the clubs, just saying he's not a legit exception. The list of guys that took at least a temporary step back after a significant equipment change is sizable, Homa being the most recent

I thought Homa was due to swing changes and coaching change.

And equipment. Went from Titleist to Cobra

Entering the club market at a stupid high price seems like a strange move, especially with irons. Lately with Takomo, Hogan and sub 70 coming online with decent equipment at good prices it at least makes me think about trying them out. But there is no way these clubs are $1000+ better than Titleist, Ping, Srixon or any other big manufacturer.

Maybe just a play at the dumb, rich (and bad) old golfers like the early PXG days.
