Women's Golf in Contention After First Round of NCAA Championship

CARLSBAD, Calif. -- The No. 4 Texas A&M Women's golf team was tied for 11th and one shot outside of the top eight after round one of the 2026 NCAA Championship at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa Friday.

"Something I have observed out here is that the afternoons play a lot harder than the mornings because of the conditions," Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "I thought we were very solid today. If we carry that into tomorrow, we will be in a great position.

The Aggies drew the afternoon tee time for the first round and will return to the course Saturday morning at 8:52 a.m. Eight of the top 15 teams after round one held a morning start on Friday, despite the morning wave being comprised of the bottom 15 ranked teams coming into the tournament.

Texas A&M was tied for 11th at 1-over 289, which was once shot outside of the looming cut of the top eight after Monday's final round of stroke play to advance to match play. No. 5 Texas, No. 16 SMU and No. 34 LSU were tied for eighth at even-par 288.

Freshman Brynn Kort paced the Maroon & White at 1-under 71 and tied for 24th. The Kingman, Arizona, native posted two birdies on the back nine on Nos. 10 and 15 to get her under par in her NCAA Championship debut.

Cayetana Fernandez Garcia-Poggio had a team-high four birdies and shot even par to take a piece of 41st into the second round. Sky Sudberry and Vanessa Borovilos shot 1-over 73 to tie for 60th and Natalie Yen rounded out the lineup at 4-over 76.

Following the third round of stroke play on Sunday, the Aggies will need to stay within the top 15 in order to qualify for Monday's final round. After Monday, Texas A&M will need to stay within the top eight to advance to match play.

Yep.

Worst round on the course currently by 6 shots at +8. 12 shots back of the best round of the day currently. More teams under par than over currently on the day.

We might have just shot ourselves out of this one.

Great year, ladies!

I wonder if there aren't some issues playing on the different grasses? Maybe we could travel that way for some more tournaments, or quick down and back re-con missions to La Costa periodically?

Great finishes in Gerrod Chadwell's first three years here, and I thought this year would be the one we got closer to a championship. Still a great season overall regardless.
