I blow mine out with a blower, then mow them into a bag for disposal.
10 years ago we moved into a duplex, and the previous residents hadn't done **** with the lawn in years. The backyard was a mess, with minimal actual grass and waist high weeds. The first thing we did was pull all the weeds. The second was bag up all the live oak leaves from the tree back there. I pulled out about 25 45 gallon trash bags of mulched leaves, and this yard was only about 40x30, if that. After 3-4 years of keeping it raked and leaf free, the grass had taken back over half the yard and was growing in really well when we left.
If you have live oaks, the only way to keep grass is to get all off the leaves out. You can keep them down by keeping the trees trimmed and removing sap suckers. I've started doing that, and my front yard has finally turned more into grass than a mix of grass and weeds. The backyard is a bit of a lost cause because it never had grass to begin with, and the trees are way too tall for me to trim. Someday I'll get it under control though.
