I went ahead with the DIY approach I described earlier and did not replace the header. My FIL is an engineer, he ran some load calcs and we decided a laminated beam wasn't necessary. 3 years later no sagging issues and I can park without folding the mirrors.

I found the framing & post removal to be trivial for my property. The center post was clearly not bearing any load and pretty much fell out once the track was unbolted. The hard part was finding an installer to consider the project. I eventually found a smaller outfit that agreed to work with me and quite a door for an opening that was to be framed. I can post info if you need it.

Southpaw, what is the way to contact you? I'm thinking of doing the same thing in Houston.

Sorry, I missed the thread bump earlier. We didn't do ours as other projects took priority. It may still be down the line. Glad to hear about Southpaw's experience, though.

If single door widths the problem to solve (ala most spec.houses), then
SOP = the segregated headers (Southpaws must have a huge header that spanned both doors = Rare indeed) would be replaced with a Heavy Expensive one (PSL or steel flitch) then expensive, odd-width door.

Tangent: some of the header trouble/$$$ above can be saved with a "sister" header + new 3" pipe column centered but this is RARE to expose the column & most will place a planter guard in front of it to avoid disasters.

Everyone brags about ONE door but few admit to banging each others car by opening doors when parking too close! Ask your insurance agent how frequent this has been!

If ONE remote is the problem, then EZ to program so both doors go up.

It's not like 2 doors with 16" between them gives the cars additional room in the garage.

In my case, my old 2006 F150 would barely fit in a single door, I would have to pull in one mirror to get in the garage. When I replaced that truck with a Raptor, there was no way it would fit through a single door. The truck is wider than the opening. I have plenty of space with a single door.

We have a 3 car garage.. I park F150 on right side, wife parks durango next to me, but she pulls in at an angle to the left.. so I can fully open my driver door and not hit her car. Then she has nothing to her left so she can fully open hers as well.

Even the kids get in and out and never a banged door in 10 years.

With a 2 car, I could see it being a bit more tight.. but 3 seems pretty common these days.

I was lucky with the header… 1965 construction. Talking with a few neighbors around the time of the project, it seems the single header was default for my neighborhood.

I got to a standard size (17' I think) door by adding a couple of extra jack studs on the inside edge of the unified opening to support the header and narrow the overall width.
