I'm blocking out this niche so the tile guy can install a flush and less busy pattern around the window.

I intend to add spacers no matter the orientation to get it aligned. But is it better to screw into the existing wood with them flat or perpendicular to the tile?

I know the can bow over time but figure me screwing them really well should limit movement.

Side question: I was going to mud them in for a smoother surface but am thinking it isn't necessary as the glue/adhesive will do the job?

Wood expands and contracts across the grain. Your top pic would be the better orientation. However, if you are wrapping the tile around and returning it to the window, then it really doesn't matter.

On a side note...I would never tile on raw wood, just a little movement will crack a grout line or maybe a tile? I would reduce the wood by 1/2" in dimension both ways and add a layer of Hardi board or Durock.

Unless you want problems with that tile, you need to install cement board or sheetrock before you tile.

You're too darn fast!! Keep your fingers crossed. Hopefully the wood was lower moisture. Tough to say sometimes with dimensional lumber, unless you have a good moisture meter.

What's your tile? Trying to figure out our backsplash now.

We ordered from Tilebar. The line was called, "Portmore". It's not quite as rough as a Zellig style which is very popular right now.

One thing I would caution: sometimes it is easiest to get a tile you can just grab at Floor and Decor or the Tile shop. They'll take back excess.

Also, my wife just said, "This is what I like and I'm going to order: tell me how much I need." But she didn't really think through the bullnose options or schluters that could be required in the kitchen. So be sure that whatever tile you choose has sufficient options for you to get a quality look.

For instance: the tile we ordered was $10 sq ft, but each bullnose piece was $9.

Love your new tile! We live in a fairly rural area - only one big box store & no specialty tile stores. For us, it's pretty much white subway tile at this point - maybe the one that's kinda "lumpy" if we can find it anywhere in the area.

Your tile is a big visual upgrade though.
