If it's a closet or something, you can build out a chase in it to the floor below, potentially all the way down to the first floor depending on the rest of the house. That maybe should have been the case, and maybe they were supposed to have return ducts installed going down and and picking up returns between the floor joists or something. Seems like the installer completely forgot or disregarded that

The house is a weird design and they did not do themselves any favors by putting the HVAC equipment at teh very back in the third floor closet/attic. The air intakes/returns system was completely messed up before even finding the restriction/idiocy.

My hope is that they there might be enough room in the mechanical closet area to reinstall things horizontally. Then they could rework the connection of the return plenum so it attaches on the end of the blower without any restrictions.

You almost have to think it was a last minute change to the floorplan or something that prompted a move of the HVAC to that location because literally everything about the system is horrible.

Not necessarily an open chase, but a chase for return ductwork. You can have metal ducts between floors all day as long as they're properly sealed between floors and don't create an opening. The chase is just to hide the ducts.

I believe you could also have an open chase as long as you install the proper fire damper on the floor opening.

I would like to think that. Unfortunately, this is one of the later builds. Looking at the outside roof location of the furnace exhaust on the other houses, it is the same. So would appear things were designed this way.

I could buy into the idea that they were supposed to install the unit and plenums horizontally, but did it vertically instead to leave more storage space or working space. But who knows, supervision is nonexistent in new builds.

Recently had a third water main leak in the front year over a one year period, so decided to just replace the line. They found that pressure from both external faucets was over 100 psi so replaced the pressure reducing valve as well.

Work completes and pay the last half. Walk inside and here loud rushing water, run over to where they had cut out and installed the new valve to see my own inside water fountain. Sprint back outside to get them before they left. The lower part of the new connection had failed.

Fun times

Sounds like you just needed a pressure reducing valve put in at the water meter

Would be way too hard to actually check their work for leaks!

Unfortunately, I have a recent entry from our build.

Best our builder and the Sheetrock sub owner can tell, Sheetrock foreman sent a single guy to handle a few texture issues that were on our ceiling yesterday... but he must have been drunk. Never seen texture this bad. And to top it off, it was absolutely everywhere-on other walls, trim, tools, etc… and the photos don't do it justice at all.

Dude got himself fired. Builder has been using this Sheetrock crew for 15 years, so he hasn't fired the sub but demanded this guy be fired/not on his job sites anymore.

Best part was, trim crews are still on site and pre-paint drywall punch wasn't scheduled until next week.

At least these will be fixed so this won't be a permanent entry to the thread.

Wooooof. At least you're going to get it taken care of, but I sure hope it doesn't do anything to the bare wood.

Looks like they sent a 4 year old who just started playing with the spray gun.

Or he thru a M-80 in a bucket of texture and then called it good.

Keep em coming. It helps to laugh. Firework or 4 year old is a more fun explanation than drunk, rogue worker.

The foreman is over there today and tomorrow hand scrubbing any rogue spray with his fingernail and a damp warm cloth before going to a very fine sandpaper. Sheetrock owner told the foreman it was his responsibility after firing the worker.

Then comes the actual texture fix next week. Only about a week delay thankfully.

We're looking at mid-to-late after originally looking at August when we started. But on budget so guess I can't complain too much

There are several Twitter accounts that show nothing but things that would be perfect for this thread but I never post them. Maybe I should.

Is that not how it's done?

I hope the supervisor/worker conversation went a little like this (re: M80 in the bucket)

Not really shoddy. First time I have seen this gadget.

Unnecessary in this 1 year old home with no trees in sight. I am super sensitive to airflow restrictions at the condenser, so initial thought is I don't like it. What say you? Good? Bad?

If good, I could maybe use one at my house with a bunch of trees.

Probably dumb. The idea of shade is to cool the unit and the area around it that it draws air from. Probably better to paint it with something like this: https://www.purdue.edu/research/features/stories/the-whitest-paint-is-here-and-its-the-coolest-literally/

I thought of it as keeping debris out of the unit. Not shade. Have seen some pretty silly and elaborate setups to try and accomplish shade.

I use one, but it's only on the top (exhaust), has been on for three years and no issues.

I have oaks surrounding unit and I would get massive amounts to leaf drop debris. This resolved about 99% of problem. If you have leaves I would recommend. In your case, likely a waste.
ABATTBQ11

Oh ok. Probably dumb then. Dirt will go right through it.

The picture was from a client today. Like I said, kinda useless since there was not a tree in sight of the unit.

I might actually get a top only one for my home unit. I would only use it in the fall/ spring when I get a crap ton of leaves. I dread the fall for leaves in the pool.

I had a chimney inspection done last week because I have a leak in my ceiling (new build) and I'm trying to figure out the source. The inspection company, which obviously wants to sell me repairs, found that the pipe isn't connected properly. I asked the installer about it and their response is below the picture. What do you think?

Ugh, give me a min to figure out posting a pic

Special shoutout to the chump that decided to use a non-pressure treated bottom plate on this wall back in 1994.

As of you could actually find a person to ask anything of at Home Depot. In the rare cases you find an employee they don't know anything anymore.

Gone are the days of the old guys who were semi retired with tons of knowledge

Not sure those days ever existed. I worked at both HD and Lowe's in HS/college and it was heavily populated by morons.

That's why I have the HD and Lowe's apps. Instead of having a Lowe's employee tell me that she doesn't know what a shim is (which has happened), I can look up where they're located and get them myself.

Totally agree.

In my experience, the HD app is wrong about product location roughly 40% of the time.
