It's better ventilated than most of the roofs I see. It ain't pretty, but that dog will hunt.

That's the way all the houses were done in my neighborhood, when our roof was replaced they did ridge vents.

House was built in 2004, maybe it was a trend?

2004 was the the run up to the absolute height of the building boom. Various common supplies were in short supply ant times and builders got creative with "solutions" to keep work going. Sometimes it was someone like DR Horton buying entire manufacturing runs and parking them in a warehouse. It was weird.

A lot of times there just wasn't enough ridge to vent properly. Many turtle vents will solve the problem, or few domes/power vents. Removing 10 turtles and replacing with ridge will typically reduce ventilation when spaced as above.
