Is this an "I don't want to do this job" quote?

I got a quote today to have the roof replaced for my cabin project. The job is removal of the 3-tab shingle roof and replace with painted metal roof. The building is 12x16 with a gambrel roof.

$7,159.82

That's roughly $28 per SF. I've never had a metal roof installed, but that seems quite high for such a small building.

It sounds high to me.

How many squares? I did one like this a few years ago for $5300, but $7200 was not unreasonable. The one I did was about 6 squares of roofing surface, each of the four facets on the roof was 6.5' x 22'. There was no tearoff, it was a new install. It was a striated standing seam.

So, use that as a guide.

Is he roll forming on site? If you don't want to publicize it, send me the facet measurements from you iPhone measure app and I can tell you if it's high. Hard to go on building size, but it seems it might be twice as high as it should be unless I am missing something.

Probably 3 squares; 4 tops (online calculator says 3). I don't know if he's roll forming on site because that level of detail was not included. there was, however two pages of stuff about how the materials they will use are SO much better than everyone else and another page listing everything that was add to the cost..

It does a little sound high. Sometimes in my business we have to subcontract "small" standing seem metal roofs and it is like pulling teeth to get decent quotes. I've noticed subs in that trade seem to really hate small jobs.

That said our materials and labor on a recent 3 sq job was $2,500 ( that's sub-labor pricing and contractor material pricing) Assuming a 50% gross markup, meaning somewhere around $5K is a fair price to the customer.

He quoted architectural shingles at $4800 - as much as it cost to do my entire house.

Second quote for metal roof came in at $3,000, which seems to be worth it after I ran takeoffs for materials.

Houston. I have a small house. It was maybe 13 or 14 squares max.

280 per square is a steal.
Except that it's $2800 per square.

You're right. Don't know what i was thinking.

My shingles have been going for 4-5 dollars per square foot. My non painted metal roof have been going 8-10 dollars per square foot.

I'm a little confused on your calculation.

Is the roof area 12 x 16 or is the floor area 12 x16?

Floor area is 12x16. Roof facets are approx. 3x16 (x2) and 5x16 (x2) for roughly 256 SF.

Is part of thr gambrel roof a very steep pitch?

Ultimately, it is an expensive roof per square foot. I did a shed roof last summer that was about 12x24 and it ran me about 5k.

There's definitely a minimum charge sort of deal going on along with a pain in thr ass sort of charge. Is it high? Yes. Will you get a better price? I'm doubtful

The most id except to spend on something g like that with metal would be in the 10-12 dollar a square foot range. 5-6 for shingle.

But, those small jobs are a real pain.

Best of luck

I am having a different company to come out and do it for somewhere between $11-12 per SF.
