We have a house with a large outdoor patio with vaulted ceiling. The fan is your basic ceiling fan, doesn't hang low enough and not nearly large or powerful enough to feel any wind.

I'm aware of the BigA fan company but not quite sure if that's necessary. Anyone have any other recommendations?

just search for any HVLS fans.. big ass is just one of many brands, and is proud of the name ($$).. They come in lots of different sizes.

We put at 70" fanimation fan from Lowe's on our vaulted patio cover and it works great and didn't break the bank. Moves a lot of air.

How big is your patio?

We have a 20x15 gable patio with a 15x10 attached louvered pergola. I'm trying to figure out the size of fan needed for the main gable patio cover.

I'll second the Minka Aire recommendation. I put the following in my living room and patio and have been extremely happy with it. It moves a ton of air. In fact, the living room has never gone above a 1 out of 6 different settings, because the high end start blowing around paper in my house:

+1 to this. With any larger fan, just make sure you have enough space above the fan for proper airflow to get the most of out it, but it sounds like you want it lower anyway. Bigass fans really helped blow up the market in this area, but there are tons of DC motor options with big blades now.

We replaced our patio fans with these a couple of years ago:

So far, so good.

Thank you all. Looks like some good options to select from! Without measuring I'm guessing this area of our patio is roughly 25x20 with vaulted height of 17ish. And it's not an open gable

We went with a Hunter Downtown 72" on our 16'x23' covered patio and it moves a good amount of air. It had better reviews than most. I really wanted an 84" fan but the reviews on the larger units really seem to be considerably worse with lots of complaints that they don't move enough air.

I put up a MinkaAire H2O summer of '21 on my patio. Love it.

This is what we have had for the last three years. Be aware that speed matters too. Some of the really big fans move at such low rpms that they dont actually move as much air as a smaller version.

This is what we have in our living room. It's probably 15' up, and I think it's set to the lowest speed. Paid $700 or so for it. It's big, I think an 84".

Just here to say that after seeing this thread, I decided to go with the Minka-Aire and it is currently on sale at Home Depot (at least in the 65"). I'm picking up 2 for my (soon to be) covered patio. If you are looking for these, now's a good time to buy.

I'll chime back in, I just bought my third Minka Aire, this time the Roto in 52" for my bedroom, and still just as happy, I'm pretty sure this is an AC motor vs the Xtreme H2O which is a DC motor. Once it broke in the fan is super quiet and moves a lot of air.

We have 2 MinkaAires on our patio. They're on the same circuit / switch, and it's a relatively slow startup. I called their HQ regarding the hesitation and they said they recommend each fan be on its own circuit. I think that's ridiculous and possibly incorrect, but just an fyi of what I heard. The ship had already sailed for us and no way we were re-wiring for that.

For those that have the Minkaire, I have seen a ton of reviews of rusting. How bad is it? We are in the Houston area and humidity appears to wreck these fans.

Had mine up for 4 years in DFW, and no rust visible whatsoever

In Houston and on yr 2, no problems

Piggybacking this thread...

We've got a very old outdoor fan on our relatively small patio. Figure 16' x 10' covered area. I'm looking to replace it, but the fan and lights are each on separate switches and each of those is a three way.

What's the best way to dump one set of switches on the assumption that any new fan will be a single circuit with a remote? Some brief Googling was tough to find old design fans where I could just go like-for-like. I'm open to that too if it's simpler.

Just take the switches out and wire nut the hots together. I would still keep one switch personally.
