I'm in need of replacing the original frame and door to my back patio. I've been quoted around $2K for the whole thing by a "friend of a friend".

I understand that a door will cost $600-$900, so this seems like a decent deal, but thought I'd ask here first.

Thanks.

My rule of thumb on a job like this is to get Home Depot or Lowe's to give you a quote on the door and installation as a reference point. They are typically on the upper end of what you'd want to pay.

If it's done well, 2K is a good price.

Not sure how nice of a door, since it is in the back, but for any front door type that you want to look good, I would use a Door Only type company. However, if it is just a plain door, it may be easy.

One fact I learned:
Lowes and HDepot will list the doors cheaper, but hey may be missing something. (example: basic igloo cooler at walmart vs sports store is a $10 difference. however, walmart version will not have the cooler divider or tray in the cooler). The door example we saw was the door ordered from the factory included magnets that drew the door closed, that the box stores do not include. Just little things to think about.

In 2022, I had siding, windows and doors replaced on my house. Doors were front and back door. Front was single door with sidelights converted to a double door and back door was single door for single.

I believe the back door was about $2k, but we went with a metal (or fiberglass) door, full window with built in blinds. Storm resistant and locks at one point but latches in 3 different spots.

I believe the front door was around $3-5k?

Granted this was part of a whole house package, but $2k today for everything doesn't sound bad.

I would ask does it include trim (replacement of old with new), paint, locks, and other 'stuff'? One thing we had issues with on the front door was the old trim, from the mid-80's, is slightly different that new, current stuff. Luckily, they went custom for us to match, but if not, you are now looking at something looking 'off / odd' or redoing the whole room (kitchen, breakfast, etc.) to match.

aka, scope creep.

The same with painting (can you match inside and out) and hardware (re-key vs. reuse).

Depending on the type of door, 2-3k is pretty good. I wouldn't use Home Depot or Lowe's to do it…I'd use a professional door/window company

It's a 36" exterior builder grade door with inset window panes. Looks like this:

Moulding needs to be replaced and the bottom of the door is starting to rot.

Are they painting everything too ?

Without paint you are looking at roughly 550-600 in materials

Also is that vinyl siding on the outside ?

If the bottom of the door is starting to rot, you prolly have other issues with angle/level/threshold.

OP...where are you located? If in Houston, this is who we have used on both the front door and back french. Not cheap, but solid quality for the price.

Buy a can of spray foam and make sure they fill the gaps between the door jamb and wall.
