Rural Coaxial - Fiber Service

We live in the rural areas outside Waco, for the past 6 years we've used Central Link Wi-fi over radio towers for internet service.

For the past couple of weeks someone has been trenching and installing data cables and fiber up and down the streets with what looks to be the final node on our street just touching our property.

A sign just went up today advertising for Spectrum Gig fiber service. From my understanding it's a coaxial fiber hybrid network?

I have to assume even far out the country its a decent upgrade over radio tower service.

Some questions:
We have a 900 drive from property line to our house. Will they trench that? At what cost?
What's the reliability of Spectrum as an ISP these days?
Anyone have any experience similar to above?

Call Spectrum for answers to most of your questions

In my experience, they're no better or worse than any other provider

All modern cable systems are "hybrid fiber coax." They run fiber to a node in the neighborhood and then it's RF over coax to the houses. Spectrum has really been working overtime lately to market their "gig service" in response to increased competition from fiber to the home providers (AT&T, Frontier, etc.). In reality the speed can hit upwards of 940 Mbps down but I believe is limited to about 40 Mbps up. More than adequate for almost all users but it's not symmetric like true fiber service.

Probably an upgrade over fixed wireless but about the same reliability.

We do well with 300mbps cable on poles to serve both house & business ... when they are not throttling back, so this is faster than dish or Starlink even when upgrade options are compared $$/bit ... therefore any sort of cable enhanced will be better and you only need a small bit more ... not a whole Gig.

Past clients have made a deal for similar services trenching to them with out of pocket discounts at first, then paybacks to them as more cable customers signed up at their end ... a sharing of first costs and profits in a sense.

RJ,
Not sure if its the same but we also had internet over radio towers and we tried Starlink but it was all over the place as far as speeds and uptime. We had a regional company come and put fiber in and they did trench around 500 Ft to the house.
Be certain where you want them to come into the house. I changed my mind and had to move it after they came in. Mark out any irrigation lines and especially any water lines (they were trenching right across the water line from my well)

Whether coax is involved or not depends on their install. I have AT&T fiber and they ran a fiber line all of the way to my house.

As a result, we get extremely high speeds.

I have Spectrum coax to the house and get 600 down & up for $30/month including taxes, for 2 years . Was much slower and much more expensive before AT&T Fiber moved in. Gotta love competition.

The reliability isn't quite as good as AT&T Fiber, has a few minute interruption every few months, but works well overall.
