Like the title says - looking at a murphy bed for the home office / junk room for guests to stay in. It would be the kids room and boot the kids to the couch, but since grown people don't fit real well in a crib figured I could utilize the home office space as well.

Anyone have any recommendations? Brands to stay away from? Pony up for a "built in" cabinet? Aything to consider or avoid?

They always seem like such a good idea, but I can't recall ever actually seeing in someone's house. Gotta be a reason.

We had a custom one built this spring. It ended up being a little more of a challenge for our carpenter but he had proven to do good work on many other things, just not a lot of murphy bed experience.

Ended up being an entire wall of built in bookcases/cabinets with the bed in the middle. I can try to post some pictures if there is any interest.

Oh, and it was a lot more expensive than I had budgeted. Partly because I hadn't really considered painting costs. Overall we are really happy with the end product and it's allowed our guest room to be used for the 50 weeks of the year nobody is sleeping there.

We put one in the bedroom that I use as an office. It's been great so far and gets a fair amount of use when the in-laws are in town. We went with the chest style instead of the fold-down style and I think that was the right choice for us. I can use the top of the chest as storage for office stuff like my printer and other things. And the bottom section is a pull-out drawer for additional storage space. Link below. We bought it from Home Depot and it shows out of stock now but you might be able to find it elsewhere or something similar.

Fair warning, it was a pain in the ass to put together. About an 8 beer project.

On new house designs, the Office/Guest Rooms may begin with Sico/Murphy ideas but the trend has been to go to a quality comfortable Queen mattress in a sleeper sofa* that serves Both functions.
* this does take some shopping skills

Extras include
Lockable desk, wall TV above

Space hog ideal solutions include a Teacher's closet = desk perimeter to a walk-in with locked door which begs to also have a small guest closet in room.

I had one built in 2021 for our guest room because both me and my wife were working from home. I've really enjoyed having the extra space for my office. We don't live in a huge house and my wife has been using the study for the last decade. It's been nice to have the flexibility, especially since I still work a hybrid schedule, working from home on Mondays and Fridays.

I used this company out of Arkansas. They were the only ones I could find that would do one for a king size bed. They were great! Fully customizable. Private shipping. Super easy to assemble yourself.

I can post a couple of pictures if anyone is interested.

Man theirs are really nice. Love those desk combo ones.

We bought one off wayfair and use it when the house is full of families for holidays and birthdays . Etc. we like it , holds a queen and doesn't take up too much space . If I could do it again I'd have spent more to have the desk built in but for now we just move the desk and chairs .
