Can anyone give me an idea by linear foot how much the install should run for crown molding?

I am confident I could do it myself but since I no longer have the tools I did in the past and feel rather lazy this Christmas season I would like to know what it might cost.

TIA

I had 75 linear feet done for $850 earlier this year. That includes the cost of materials for a basic moulding.

Is this a pretty standard layout? Any weird corners or transitions? Standard height ceilings or something like 10-11'?

Is this a single piece or a two-step? Guessing a traditional wood not a poly or artificial product? Not some huge like 7"+ product?

Are you including caulk/nail fill/sand/prep? Will you stain or paint?

Those were all the questions that probably need to be answered to be 100% accurate.

I've seen materials range from $4 to $75+ a linear foot.
Labor probably runs $5-6 a foot these days unless there's a really small volume (then it's more per ft but lower overall). Any of the complicating factors above and likely add to that labor cost.

At the moment, this is just a project idea, but you bring up a good question I had not considered. What is the difference between using wood versus some of the plastic things I see offered online?

Big difference in cost between a painted product and a stained product. Stained will highlight a lot of imperfection, so a stain-graded moulding is more expensive.

There are several different materials you can use. Not sure what your proximity to a good supplier is?

Pine...cheap, easy to cut, shape, stains okay, paints well.
Poplar...cheap, easy to cut, shape, wouldn't stain unless you are really good, paints well, knot free.
Red oak, white oak, cherry, walnut...$$$, only for staining.
MDF...cheap, comes in 16' lengths, pre primed, paints well, straight.
Plastic, hard foam...just no.

I used to hate MDF (medium density fiberboard, basically hard brown paper), but after doing a few projects like box beam ceilings where I did hundreds of linear feet of crown per project, I came around. It was cheap ($1 per foot), 16' lengths, straight, doesn't expand and contract much at all, pre primed, yes, when nailing, it 'mushrooms' a bit, but a bit of filling and sanding and the final product is great.

Buck C asked a lot of good questions. Follow that advice so you get what you want and can compare 'apples to apples' if you get multiple bids.
