Kenmore Elite side-by-side freezer/fridge type, ice maker in the freezer door.

For months, the ice maker would just stop making ice. I would bang on it, move the little stop bar and it felt like things inside the motor were maybe affected by frost, and then it would mysteriously start again and work for a week or so then do same thing. So, I took it out, disassembled, thawed and re-installed.

Typically when you turn on the power button button, you hear the motor do something...after re-assembly I didn't.

Since I dumped a bag of ice in there, I sort of forgot about it and 4 days later, it starts making ice again and been going strong ever since.

Any ideas on why the intermittence? Strange that it worked after a few days but that also coincided with us leaving the house and we adjust thermostats accordingly so the house is hotter/colder than usual. I started thinking - could ambient house temp affect this somehow? Makes no sense why to me. Could it be a water line issue? Just thought today maybe I need to cycle out my filter for the water, assuming the water that goes to ice maker also passes through it?

Only reason I care is that the ice maker part is no longer available anywhere...unless someone knows a secret place to purchase. FWIW the model # is 79551076010

Could be a bad contact or sensor for ice/water level. You may have also accidentally locked the armature that checks the ice level and stops it from making too much.

On our 2013 LG side-side ice on door
the issue has always been the trap door staying open too long or ice stuck it open long enough to begin the thaw-freeze inside ... then things get ugly.

With children, one can add to this open-close door too often = lowers freezer temps below what ice maker requires, so it will take a vacation until it gets happy again.

Finally it gives up.
LG is only on its second maker, all the rest needed a new replacement every 3-5 years even IF made in USA. Go figure.

Guessing what to do =
  • pack freezer gel bags near the maker
  • always clean the trap door chute, chisel even minor ice dams, check trap door when doping the overhaul you described
  • try what others suggest
  • buy a 110v $120 countertop ice maker that delivers faster, softer-for-teeth, ice ... even though cleaning is a larger chore as backup or plug in when trouble arrives
Gotta draw since me got no grammar MasterArch '76

Maybe not getting to a low enough temperature. Y'all staying out of it for a couple days maybe helped. Get a govee freezer monitor and track the temp. Freezer monitor is a good idea anyway.
