It is already invading my beds. Is it too early to use Sedgehammer? I've used it before but don't remember it showing up this early.

Pull it up religiously. I had it in my yard and pulled it up every time it tried to get going. It finally stopped after a couple months and I haven't seen it since.

Then that probably wasn't nutsedge. Pulling it makes it propagate faster. Don't pull nutsedge

It's in my beds. I sprayed it yesterday and will probably do another round on Friday.

I'ev found it takes a few repeated rounds like that. The treatment really only kills what's already above ground. More will keep coming up so those repeated treatments will help knockout the new growth and prevent the spread.

It was definitely nutsedge. Pulling it doesn't kill it right away and can help it propagate because of the carbohydrates and energy stored in the nut/root, but it will eventually die if you make it expend that energy trying to grow over and over again without replenishing. You have to be religious about pulling it as soon as it comes back up, but it can be done.

Huh. Learn something new every day I guess. I've always been told to never ever never under any circumstances pull nutsedge.

It helps if you pull as close to the ground a possible. Sometimes you can get the nut if you get your fingers into the dirt a little (like 1/2" - 3/4"). I swear it grows so that it's detachable at the base, right at ground level, and the stem will break away from the roots, but if you can get just below that you can get a lot of the root structure too.

Just use sedgehammer. When new ones come up, use it again. Takes a couple doses and then it all dies.

If it is in the flower beds, it usually starts with one and then spreads underground. I usually just dig up the area and throw the dirt away. Then mulch over it. Anything pops up, hit it with the chemicals to control it going forward.

Of course, if it is everywhere digging it out is harder.

I quit using mulch in most cases. Have read several articles stating that the nutsedge travels in with the mulch lots of times.

It can go right through it, too. I put 8" down for my kids' playground after nuking the area with a ground clear herbicide and putting down weed block. Sure enough, some came up through the weed block and every inch of mulch. I dug down in the mulch, pulled it through the weed block, and haven't seen it since.
