I have an older JD zero turn that I am going to replace. With so many options on the market I have no clue where to go with a new one. My father has a Bad Boy that he really likes, but its got a pretty large footprint and hes only had it about 3 months, so he doesnt know how long it will hold up.

What does everyone else like.

I bought my JD Commercial zero turn probably close to 20 years ago and still use it exclusively. It has the "7-Iron" 60" deck which has been absolutely awesome. I wanted the heaviest and widest deck I could get between my trees. I mow wet, dry, doesn't matter. I think I have replaced the blades twice, I keep them sharpened, change the oil, and just haven't had any issues with it the entire time I've owned it.

I am a huge proponent of buying commercial grade equipment for residential use. I think I got it as a end of year thing for 8-9k when I got it but can't recall now. It was worth every penny.

Other brands that are in the commercial lines likely hold up similarly.

I've been happy with the Gravely 48" that I bought...for the most part.

I converted the air pulse fuel pump over to an electric fuel pump. It had fuel starve issues after about an hour of mowing before and the electric pump has solved that issue. It's a very cheap and easy conversion.

Not sure if things have changed, but when I bought my ZTR 10 years ago, the Hustler top of the line residential lineup (Raptor XD) was the best bang for the buck. Mine sees moderate duty and less than 200hrs on the clock but going strong. Kholer engine in mine, but I'm not sure that they offer that anymore.

This area is all 1-2ac grassy yards so riding mowers always on the go. After kids move out, then the zero turns appeared and turned owners into bragging sales guys/gals that love them.

I see mostly yellow ones out here with smiling driver faces, so no need to stop & ask the brand = another 1/2hr sales pitch.
The yellow ones near us are Cub Cadets from Tractor Supply, Home Depot, etc, etc.

Exceptions:
  • 2ac neighbor on 3 retirements got one that rides like a Miata, fast & smooth for over $14k
  • 1ac cheapo finally got a no-zero cheapo ... no-zeros for me but I did finally get a $2100 Deere that fits between all those narrow places
Gotta draw since me got no grammar MasterArch '76

My 2010 Dixie Chopper has been solid (owned three years, but maintain three large lawns and mow trails with grass over your heads at family farm) but I stay on top of maintenance. Oil changes in the 26hp Generac are a royal PITA, but newer models have different engines.

My local dealership has one with rear tracks and they want $19K for it which is comical for a ZTR imo.
