Not sure, but I'm going with Smutgrass.



To remove, this is what I found:

1. Small Infestations (Hand-Pulling or Spot-Treating)
For a few isolated clumps, you can dig out or spot-treat the smutgrass without harming your surrounding lawn: [1]
  • Manual Removal: Use a weeding tool to dig up the entire root system, ensuring you scrape the surface under the clump. Do this before it forms its distinct, dark-colored seed heads. [1, 2]
  • Spot Spraying: Carefully apply a non-selective post-emergent herbicide (like glyphosate) directly onto the smutgrass. Use a cardboard barrier or a brush to "paint" the leaves to prevent the chemical from drifting onto your desirable turfgrass.
