alphas BBQ thread got me to thinking about food, and i can't find a burger thread on this board. so, let's hear it. what is your favorite burger south of san marcos?

i don't know if the word has gotten out on "five guys" burgers on 1604 west just past the wal-mart, but one of their bacon cheeseburgers with a-1 sauce on it is something i would recommend trying before you bite the big one.

Madrids is money. I also like Bigz on 1604 and bitters and Bobby J's on bandera.

Second for Chester's. Didn't know they had steak cut fries.

Does Whataburger count if you're homesick? There aren't any here and the missus and I miss them a lot. There aren't many decent burger joints in the Nashville area...

If you like a wide variety of options for your burger OrderUp @ the Colonnade empowered me to make a pretty tasty one a few months ago.

I agree that Longhorn has a pretty good burger.

Chris Madrid's Macho Cheezy is pretty wicked in a good way ... the meat is a good flavor and the amount of cheddar on that burger is obscene.

Chunky's makes a mean burger. Was on Man vs. Food for the "Four Horsemen" (pretty sure that's the name of it) ... one of the hottest burgers on the planet. I haven't tried that out ... yet.

Koppe Bridge needs to open a location in San Antonio. I know I know ... not in SA, but I had one a couple weeks ago and it's worth mentioning.

I've had some unique and tasty burgers at Tycoon Flats. That place is Aggie-owned too.

Bigz Burgers was tasty each time I was there (3-5 times). You can "Get it dirty for a dollar" there ... meaning they crack an egg over your patty to make it more moist.

I've honestly never had anything impressive at Chester's.

Bobby J's burgers have always been tasty, although I don't recall the meat being as flavorful as I prefer (read hot/spicy/peppery enough).

Cheesy Jane's is the same way. Solid burger but not impressive enough.

I think it's completely cool for someone to bring up Whataburger. In fast food Whataburger reigns supreme.

also, avoid Mo Mak's Backyard on jones-maltsberger by the driving range. it sucks hard.

Chris Madrid's is highly overrated. It is an ok burger topped with a block of cheese. The nachos suck as well.

Longhorn is good, though it has been a while since i have been there.

Bobby J's has always been good when I have gone for lunch. Solid burger nothing exceptional but they get points for the fried okra.

Order Up is great with the topping options, though be careful you can over do it. I will give a special mention to the breakfast burgers as well. Highly recommended.

another place i need to try.

aggiealphamale could write a book on hamburgers.

the Texaco Station at Potranco and 151....do not expect atmosphere or "fast" food....they put the patty on when someone orders and it takes about ten minutes, but they have 2 TV's to keep you occupied.

MoMak's was unremarkable and overpriced when I went. I did enjoy their "bottlecaps" I believe they were called ... fried jalapeno slices. But if you want something like that I'd rather go to Willie's Icehouse & Grill and dip 'em in their queso & ranch.

I've always heard about a placed called "Lord's Kitchen" having an awesome burger. I think it's on the East side ... I'd like to try that out sometime.

Armadillo's off McCullough is another place to try.

Good burger that is seasoned well, though parking for the place sucks if you hit it at the wrong time.

Biff Buzby's is a new place that I've enjoyed.

Big Bob's Burgers next to Ft. Sam is also worth a stop.

For the burgers farther north.

Antlers' at 46 and 281 has the fried egg burger, very good.

TJ's in NB has the Kraut burger, nothing like sauerkraut and swiss cheese to make a great burger.

Iron Horse, the bossman, enough said.

And freiheit country store has great burgers and a good place for a cold beer.

Vote for Chester's burgers but prefer onion rings from Popeyes to augment the burger.

It's "under" the New Braunfels bridge at 35 near Ft Sam. Good eating. Tastes like someone grilled a burger in their backyard and then brought it to you, rather than restaurant food.

And +1 for Biff Buzby's. They have a car show thing like the Pig Stand on Friday nights.

I'd forgotten about Lord's Kitchen and can vouch for them. I worked at Frost with someone who was related to the folks who own Lord's and they brought a bunch of burgers by the office for lunch one day. Worth a trip back for more some day.

For you long-time San Antonians - who remembers G.W. Jr's and Whopper Burger? Both are missed. The closest thing you can find to Whopper Burger is Burger Boy on N. St. Mary's north of Josephine. The family which owned Whopper Burger runs Burger Boy and they still have the classic crinkle fries and orange freezes. Burger Boy tends to get mixed reviews though.

My favorite:
Tycoon Flats (on St. Mary's st.) pepper burger. Had it awhile back, was the best from my list. They spread guacamole and jalapenos on a burger that has just enough grease to kill you overnight. Also:
Murf's (various locations). Hole in the wall but muy bueno. One of those fast food good burgers, know what I mean???
Chester's was good, but eh.
Also Bobby J's.
Had the angus burger a 2 weeks ago at Sea Island, pretty good for the price, a little dry for me.

The best burger around is in Medina at the apple orchard. Get the SPJ, has one of those soft jalapeƱo buns, bread/butter pickles, jalapenos, lettuce, tomato, and pepperjack cheese, and a sweet/peppery spread..... It is the shizzznit. Follow it with some apple ice cream with the butter/Carmel stuff in the crockpot by it..... Heaven
